Bollywood music is a mixture of all forms of music, instruments, voices, and brains which makes it a ‘one size fits all’ where there is something for everybody. But if you’re into folk music, here are some songs you should check out.

Songs have a story to tell. Some tell what’s going on in the head, some about what’s going on in the heart, and some about what is happening at the moment.

While dialogues voicing all these feelings can really spoil the nuances, songs fit in just right. They fill the spaces between dialogues and cover for the lack of words.

Bollywood is especially known for its music. Its music is a true cultural representation of what it’s like to be India, a country known for its diversity.

1. Genda Phool – Rekha Bhardwaj

This song from the 2009 Rakesh Omprakash Mehra movie ‘Delhi 6’ starring Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor is a cult classic.

It summarises the struggles of a woman at her in-laws but the movie has made it a more fun song.

2. Ambarsariya – Sona Mohapatra 

The song talking about the first stages of growing love is from the 2013 movie directed by Mrigdeep Singh Lamba starring Richa Chadha, Pulkit Sampat, Ali Fazal, Varun Sharma, and Manjot Singh. It is a sweet melody.

3. Navrai Majhi – Sunidhi Chauhan, Natali Di Lucck

In the melodious voice of Sunidhi Chauhan, this Marathi song is a must-play at wedding parties, it is from the Sridevi starrer 2012 musical drama directed by Gauri Shinde.

4. Jugni – Arif Lohar, Harshdeep Kaur

This upbeat Punjabi song filled with a million emotions in the equally powerful voice of Arif Lohar and Harshdeep Kaur is from the movie Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty starrer movie Cocktail (2012) directed by Homi Adajania.

5. Bumbro – Shankar Mahadevan, Sunidhi Chauhan 

The 2000 Preity Zinta and Hritik Roshan starrer movie ‘Mission Kashmir’ directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra featured this Kashmiri folk song as a part of their album that is a part of every festivity anywhere in the world.

6. Khamma Ghani – Papon, Smita Jain, Vidhi Mehta

This Rajasthani folk song from the 2014 film ‘Happy Ending’ that starred Saif Ali Khan, Govinda, Ileana D’Cruz, and Kalki Koechlin was directed by Krishna D. K. And Raj Nidimoru.

It is a beautiful song of being welcoming to love.
