The Delhi police continuously witch-hunting and arresting student leaders under UAPA in the situation of lockdown. After the arrest of two Jamia student leaders and the president of Jamia Alumni Association, and invoked UAPA against student leader of JNU Umar Khalid, Delhi police barged into the house of Delhi State President of All India Student Association (AISA) Kawalpreet Kaur on 27th April in their investigation into the communal violence in February 2020 in Northeast Delhi. Kawalpreet Kaur showed her angst on her social media account on Facebook and through the light on the incident. She mentioned “the Delhi Police Special Branch came to my home to investigate the violence that happened in Delhi in February. To my utter shock, the police seized my phone citing inquiry into the violence. It was really hard to believe that this could happen to me.”
In her post she mentioned that being a student of Delhi University she was always active in organizing protests and when it comes to rally, they have read the preamble of India on India gate in mass gathering multiple times, Those were the student lead peaceful protests. She also mentioned that being a law student, I spoke against the law of fundamental values of our constitution through the discriminatory Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) brought by the government.
The student activist said as “a responsible citizen of this country, I have always spoken against all injustices in my full capacity wherever I have been. I, along with my organization All India Students’ Association (AISA) participated in peaceful demonstrations against the CAA-NPR-NRC along with thousands of others. We participated in various events where we read out the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. After the North East Delhi violence, we raised voice for peace, democracy, and justice.”
Mentioning about the violence of Northeast Delhi in for which the other fellow student leaders are charged under UAPA she mentioned that, “along with other students, I was only engaged in providing relief to the victims. “We were active in the relief work for the victims. It is deeply shocking and disturbing to know that the police are trying to intimidate me for my activism, for speaking in defense of the constitution. And last but not the least, practicing what my faith and my parents taught me, which says ‘sarbat da bhala’, i.e. Welfare to all.”
She mentioned that the Delhi police action of seizing her phone is ‘Outrageous’ and is an attempt to instill fear amongst all. She also said that the Delhi police is doing all this during the time of lockdown faced with a pandemic when It is difficult to access legal help and hold a mass protest.
By the end of her post, she asked everyone to stay united and said, stand united against the intimidating tactics of Delhi Police amidst lockdown. Our struggle to uphold our constitution and democratic rights must go on despite the government’s attempt to intimidate and silence voices of democracy, secularism, and justice.”
The Delhi police had on April 20 claimed to have done its job “sincerely and impartially” while investigating the Jamia and North East Delhi riot cases. “All arrests have been made based on scientific and forensic evidence,” it insisted.
