The farmers union front leading the protest Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), announced a Bharat Bandh earlier this month to be witnessed on March 26 across the country. The strike will be observed tomorrow from morning till evening tomorrow in protest against the three farm laws and to also mark the four months of the ongoing farmers’ protests on the borders of the national capital.

 

The farmers’ agitation is reaching the four-month mark across the country. Millions of protesting farmers from Punjab, Haryana, UP, and several other states have been demanding for the farm laws to be repealed and for a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price.

 

‘Make Bharat Bandh a success

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha appealed to the citizens to make March 26 a success.

Farmer leader Buta Singh Burjgill said they will observe the Bandh on a day when the farmers’ protest will reach the fourth month on March 26. “The peaceful bandh will remain effective from morning till evening,” Burjgill said.

“We appeal to the people of the country to make this Bharat Bandh a success and honor their ‘Annadata’,” farmer leader Darshan Pal was quoted as saying by PTI.

 

Earlier this month a meeting was also held to outline their protest plans, the unions also said the rallies and protests against the corporates will intensify.

Notably, The SKM has clarified that the states and union territories where Assembly Elections are going to take place will be exempt from Bharat Bandh on 26 March.

 

No road or rail traffic movement

 

During the strike, from 6 am to 6 pm, all business establishments will be closed and no road and rail traffic will be allowed to ply, the farmers’ unions announced.

Farmers’ leaders also said that copies of the new farm laws will be burnt during ‘HolikaDahan’ on March 28.

 

Opposition Support for the Bharat bandh

 

Congress MP Digvijaya Singh tweeted in support of the protesting farmers. “We support the call for Bharat Bandh on 26th March against the three Anti-Farmers Bill,” Singh said.

 

CPI(M) Andhra Pradesh also poured in support for the country-wide strike.

 

This is the second time farmers’  have announced a nation-wide strike.  The first ‘bandh’ took place on 8th December which was witnessed in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Assam and received support from trade unions, various other organizations as well as 24 opposition parties, including the Congress and the NCP.
