Farmers Protest Update

At many locations in the capital city, protesting farmers clashed with police and reached the historic Red Fort and ITO in the heart of the country’s capital, with hundreds of them straying from negotiated paths, forcing security staff to react with lathicharge and tear gas.

The tractor rally will represent the conclusion of two months of agitation by farmers protesting on the outskirts of Delhi against Centre’s controversial farm rules. On February 1, the day the Union Budget will be unveiled, farmers’ leaders have confirmed a decision to march on foot to Parliament.

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda has urged protesting farmers to maintain peace and be patient. He said “discipline and non-violence have been the biggest strengths of this movement and farmers must continue with non-violent protests” and added that he had never seen such a large, peaceful, and disciplined movement in his life.

 

20.34: Over 70 policemen wounded during the dispute with farmers. Delhi Police has said over 70 police personnel were injured during today’s clashes with protesting farmers at different places in the national capital.

 

 

The man died as his tractor overturned at ITO where many farmers partaking in the parade had approached from the Ghazipur border after taking a detour off the pre-agreed route for the march, a senior police officer said.

 

        Telecom services have been suspended temporarily in border areas of Delhi –            Singhu, Ghazipur, Tikri, Mukarba Chowk, Nangloi, and their adjoining areas               from 12:00 pm to 11:59 pm on Tuesday.
