International Dogs day is celebrated worldwide on 26th August every year. This day is to celebrate the special bond between humans and dogs and to inspire people to serve and spread the awareness of adoption. It is globally agreed that dogs are a loyal companion and are often considered man’s best friend. Sometimes silly, sometimes serious and sometimes scary but always lovable – dogs have a special place in each one’s heart.

History and Goal:
International Dog Day was first started as ‘National Dog Day’ in the year 2004 in the US by pet expert and an animal rescue advocate Colleen Paige. She chose to remark this day on August 26 as it’s the same date that her family adopted, their first dog ‘Sheltie’ from an animal shelter home. As per the website of National Dog Day that describes their mission as “to help and motivate the public to recognize the number of dogs that are needed to be rescued each year and to appreciate family dogs.” Also, National Dog Day celebrates dogs of all breeds.
As quoted by Hindustan times, Arnab Haldar, a Delhi-based pet parent, and pet foster dad said, “I think it’s very important to keep your pet baby physically and mentally stimulated. This helps in their overall happiness and channelizes their energy positively. There are so many professions a pup can pursue.
Many pets are social media stars and have verified Instagram handles with millions of followers. Haldar also adds, “I’m training my pet to become one such Instagram star. I’ve been teaching him simple and basic tricks like shaking hands, rolling over, and even the most trending trick on social media, of fitting his nose into my curled-up fingers!”
Minal Kavishwar, from the NGO Animal Angels Therapy Foundation shares, that, “We have all types of dogs who have undergone training, and now they are well-experienced therapy dogs. She also added, “One such dog is Lucky, an indie dog who was rescued from the streets and nurtured by the owners, and then evaluated and trained to be a therapy dog. Lucky works with children who have multiple disabilities, as part of our Animal Therapy program, at Bal Kalyan Sanstha in Pune. Another popular example that got viral over the internet this month, “Tucson Prime is a street dog, who has been adopted by a Hyundai showroom in Brazil”. Well, Imagine entering a car showroom and getting greeted by Salesman of the year- A dog.

How can you make this day more special :
You can celebrate this day by donating(food, money, etc) to shelter homes or NGO’s especially working for Animals. You can also volunteer with organizations that are working for dogs. If you were planning to get a pet dog for yourself or your loved ones, then this international Dog Day is symbolically the best day to do so. Also, when you are planning to have a dog always adopt one from a shelter home, as another dog will take its place. Ultimately, you will actually save two lives.
