Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Maa’ Canteens To Feed Poor At Rs 5 Per Plate

Mamata Banerjee is being praised on social media for her step towards feeding the poor. Many Twitter users said that the food is wholesome. Videos and Pictures were circulated on social media platforms, where people were seen taking food from the canteen.

Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal had launched the “Maa Canteen Scheme” on 15 February to provide food to poor people at the subsidised rate of Rs 5. The menu comprises rice, dal, vegetables and egg curry, told by the Chief Minister while inaugurating the project in February. So far people have been praising the scheme.

Jakir Naskar, a security guard mentioned “Food is good. It costs us only five for a plate. We were spending 35 per day, now saving a lot of money. We are happy”.

Nabakumar Majhi, a resident while praising the food scheme said, “poor always worry about food, it disturbs them while working. So it is a good arrangement for poor”. He further added that  Uttam Kumar, his relative was relieved to save some money, thanks to Maa Canteen.

Maa Canteen, initiated by the Department of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Government of West Bengal (GoWB) to provide a subsidised meal at Rs 5 per plate for poor people, while the government will have to bear the cost of Rs 15 per person.

 

West Bengal government had allocated 100 crores for Maa Food Scheme. While allocating budget for food scheme through online mode Chief Minister had mentioned, “This project is dedicated to the mothers of Bengal. So please ensure that meal reaches the poor and needy one”.

Banerjee further added, “I too will come for lunch one day”.

49 canteens service is provided across 28 districts, and the canteen starts from 1 PM to 3 PM.

While condemning the scheme, Dilip Ghosh, BJP state president had said “It is totally a political showbiz due to its being launched ahead of state assembly polls”. 

He further claimed that ” Needs for subsidised kitchens reveals the plight of Bengal’s people. CM had kept people hungry and poor”.

Reacting to Ghosh statement, Debasish Kumar, a ruling party leader had said ” Centre scheme was anti-poor, so BJP was criticising Maa Canteen”.
