Movie Defined By Its Songs– Kal Ho Naa Ho

Netflix

Bollywood has given us several classic films in one of its golden ages– the 2000s. Kal Ho Naa Ho is definitely at the top of that list. Yes, it made us cry not once but every time we watch it.

But again, with melodic songs, profound dialogues, and of course, SRK’s aura, Kal Ho Naa Ho is an unforgettable tale of love, loss, and finding oneself amidst all the misery.

So, to revisit the movie again, here is Kal Ho Naa Ho but redefined through its songs. Beware! The ride is going to be nostalgic.

1. Pretty Woman

“Maine jise abhi abhi dekha hai

Kaun hai voh anjaani

Use jitna dekhoon utna sochoon

Kya use main keh doon”

The film begins with Naina and the Kapur family– we see that amongst all the funny and witty dialogues, the family is suffering from the loss of Naina’s father.

Naina seems to be someone who has sewed and locked all her emotions to materialize as a dull girl who fades into the background. We see an emotional scene where Jennifer, Gia, Shiv, and Naina pray to God to bless their lives with an angel.

And there comes the angel–Aman played by Shahrukh Khan. He is the exact opposite of Naina–happy-go-lucky and fun-loving.

We see that Aman had fallen in love with Naina at first sight and to disguise it under the veil of mockeries and jokes he sings “Pretty Woman.” It appears that Aman has come as a savior for Naina and the entire family.

2. It’s The Time To Disco

“Masti mein khoye hai hum yahan

Tum Bhi khoke mast hoke

Koi toke to khul ke kaho

It’s the time to disco”

Naina has ultimately found her inner “you live only once” soul. She transits into a fun person with just a few shots and now It’s The Time To Disco. The upbeat essence soon changes into heartache as Aman slowly frees Naina’s hands.

After the song is over, we get to see that drunk Rohit expresses his feelings for Naina and it is awfully clear that the three of them will be in a love triangle soon.

3. Chale Chalo

“Koi humse jeet na paave

Chale chalo, chale chalo

Mit jaave jo takraave, chale chalo

Bhale ghor andheraa chhaave

Chale chalo, chale chalo”

Jennifer’s restaurant is failing and Naina’s grandmother is far from changing her attitude. In the midst of all the distress, Aman arrives again as a knight in shining armor for the family with an antidote and asks them to revamp their restaurant into Indian-style.

Then plays A.R. Rahman’s legendary song from Lagaan– We are Indians and so we can accomplish anything!

Soon, their restaurant brightens up with customers and like a magician, Aman saves them. This is the period where Naina falls in love with Aman.

4. Kuch Toh Hua Hai

“Sab kuch alag hai

Sab kuch naya hai

Kuch to hua hai

Kuch ho gaya hai”

Naina loves Aman. Rohit loves Naina. Naina tells Sweetu. Rohit tells Aman. It is fun to watch yet a heartbreaking cycle as everyone still knows half the truth.

Naina calls Rohit to tell him “something important.” Now, Rohit got the wrong idea that Naina reciprocates his feelings. With the light-hearted song portraying the emotions of a person who has fallen deep in the chasm of love, Naina tells Rohit that she loves Aman.

The rain enters just in time to make the entire scene more romantic and perfect for a confession but Naina is oblivious of the grief that is waiting for her.

5. Kal Ho Naa Ho

“Us haath ko tum thaam lo

Woh meherbaan kal ho na ho

Har pal yahan jee bhar jiyo

Jo hai sama kal ho na ho”

Now plays the song that broke us into pieces. Aman is slowly dying but his love for Naina is igniting each day. The irony of it and his existence is secretly symbolized in the song.

Naina is heartbroken when she gets to know that Aman is married however it was a fabricated story to derail Naina from the bridge of loving Aman which is already split in the middle.

Rohit is trying to move on as well, he understands that Naina will never love him back. Nevertheless, Aman tries to unite Naina and Rohit. Eventually, the two of them learn how to live and grow together to slowly cross the threshold of love.

6. Maahi Ve

“Maahi ve maahi ve, that’s the way maahi ve
Tere maathe jhumar damke
Tere kaanon baali chamke hai re
Maahi ve”

Rohit proposes to Naina and she accepts! There goes a big arrangement for their engagement and Maahi Ve is the anthem for the celebration.

Naina’s family finally reunites after learning the truth about her father’s death. All the problems have been resolved– apart from Aman’s perishing heart.

7. Kal Ho Naa Ho

Par sochlo is pal hai jo

Woh dastan kal ho na ho

Har pal yahan jee bhar jiyo

Jo hai sama kal ho na ho”

Your Guardian Angel will always be the light guiding you. But guardian angels do not stay with you forever. Aman is now on their deathbed and death is waiting for him at the entrance.

Naina is devastated and Rohit is confused about everything. The tragic tale of Naina and Aman is eventually coming to an end, at least for this life. Rohit and Naina marry and Aman is there to watch the love of his life getting married to someone else.

Aman sacrifices his own love to see the person he loves happy. He knew that Naina was already broken because of her father abandoning him. Aman did not let Naina shatter once again.
