Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s temple situated in Pune was closed due to criticism from the opposition members. The temple was built by a Bharatiya Janata Party member.
The Times of India reported that the statue of the Prime Minister at the temple drew criticism from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Sonia Gandhi-led Congress.
A real estate agent and Bharatiya Janata Party member, Mayur Munde, had inaugurated the temple on the independence day.
The statue of the Prime Minister cost around 1.6 lakh and alongside it features a lotus symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Munde stated that he was deeply inspired by the political career and the service provided by the Prime Minister. Hence, he made up his mind to build a temple for the person who helped build the Ram Temple.
He stated that after gaining authority, Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside several members of the Bharatiya Janata Party had worked on several issues and developmental legislations. He counted the abrogation of Article 370, the abolishment of triple talaq, and the building of the Ram Mandir as one of the many key elements of the Narendra Modi government.
The Congress party drew criticism of the temple, stating that on one hand the BJP members are removing the names of former prime ministers and personalities from schemes and on the other, the workers of BJP are building temples for their leaders. They called the incident a “height on fanaticism.”
Prashant Japtap from the Nationalist Congress Party also stated his points on similar lines mentioning that the incident is an undue glorification of an individual.
He stated that every individual is free to choose their school of thought, but this incident of temple building provides a negative image to society. Subsequently, the temple was covered with paper and Narendra Modi’s statue was removed.
The Nationalist Congress Party members performed a ritual at the temple mocking the Bharatiya Janata Party as a protest against the rising fuel prices in India.
Prashant Japtap from the Nationalist Congress Party stated that the party members had arrived at the temple to offer petrol, LPG, and food to the idol of the Prime Minister as the prices are increasing every other day.
They also prayed at the temple, for the employment of the youth and the solution to civic problems of the country.
However, they were disappointed when they saw that the statue of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been removed.
