Actress Priyanka Chopra has apologized in the wake of the growing controversy over being a part of the American reality show, ‘The Activist‘. She has written a long post on Twitter and said that she has made a mistake in understanding the show. Before Priyanka Chopra, the makers of the show had also apologized for their format.
Priyanka wrote in her post shared on social media, “I have been moved by the power of your voices over the past week. At its core, Activism is fuelled by cause and effect, and when people come together to raise their voice about something, there is always an effect. You were heard.”
Priyanka wrote further, “The show got it wrong, and I’m sorry that my participation in it disappointed many of you. The intention was always to bring attention to the people behind the ideas and highlight the actions and impact of the causes they support tirelessly. I’m happy to know that in this new format, their stories will be the highlight, and I’m proud to collaborate with partners who have their ear to the ground and know when it’s time to hit pause and re-evaluate.”
“There is a global community of activists who fight the fight every single day and put their blood, sweat, and tears into creating change, but more often than not, they are rarely heard or acknowledged. Their work is so important, and they too deserve to be recognized and celebrated. Thank you to each and every one of you for all that you do,” she added.
The American network CBS, creators Live Nation, and Global Citizen said in a joint statement that the format of the program “distracts” the work of activists.
Global Citizen stated, “Global activism centres on collaboration and cooperation, not competition. We apologize to the activists, hosts, and the larger activist community — we got it wrong.”
“It is our responsibility to use this platform in the most effective way to realize change and elevate the incredible activists dedicating their lives to progress all around the world,
It has become apparent the format of the show as announced distracts from the vital work these incredible activists do in their communities every day,” added GC.
What caused the uproar?
Controversy has arisen over the format of ‘The Activist’, a show of people working on health, education and environmental issues. There is competition among the activists of the show, due to which the trolling of the show and the hosts, including Priyanka Chopra, started. People are against bringing activism and competition together. People are saying that the show has become a show of capitalists and elite people.
Let me tell you, Priyanka Chopra, Julianne Hough, and More Usher were hosting this show together. The contestants involved in this show were supposed to go through different tasks and challenges. The winner of the show would get prize money as well as an opportunity to attend the G20 summit.
The power of social media, to be more accurate, the power of people’s voice is the only and the highest of all. This issue has united people against the misuse of activism for TRP purposes. It was just a matter of a week, that Global citizen, Creators Live Nation, and CBS had to withdraw their project.
The show, which was already filmed, will now be re-filmed as a documentary, with the same activists who participated in the reality TV format. The TV show, which sounded like being straight from a Suzanne Collin novel, will now be re-filmed as a documentary, with the same people involved.
