Listeners are drawn into a world of their own by the deep words in the songs. When you listen to love songs, you become a dreamer who is immersed in a lovely trip of thoughts. The Indian film business is noted for producing a wide variety of films. In its films, song and dance play an important role. Both the classic and current eras of Indian cinema have produced memorable songs.

While classic romantic songs are recognized for their straightforward words and melody, modern love songs provide listeners with a completely different experience. While some Indian listeners can’t get enough of legendary old love songs, others can’t get enough of the love songs from new movies.

While there are differences in tastes and preferences between the old and new schools of music, the lyrical essence of love songs remains constant. Indian cinema has had tremendously gifted lyricists from the golden age.

In romantic songs, it’s the lyrical prowess combined with musical aspects that develops a connection with listeners. While trends come and go, love songs in Indian films will always be popular.

1. Bade Acche Lagte Hain

Amit Kumar
Balika Badhu, 1976, Hindi

Telling your loved one that you adore them as much as all the little things in life – the land, the flowing rivers, and the serenity of the night – is a simple but genuine declaration. Ammal is enjoying an evening at the riverside with his wife Rani, both newlywed teens, gently waking up to the pleasure of each other’s company in this song from Balika Badhu (1976).

When she asks him simply, “…aur?” he responds simply, “Aur tum” “You can’t help but smile,” he says. This is a sweet scene of friendship transforming into love.

2. Indradhanu

Sharayu Date
Ani…Dr Kashinath Ghanekar, 2018, Marathi

The Marathi word “Indradhanu” means “rainbow” and the lyrics describe first love as “perpetually viewing life in Technicolor” and being “very conscious of oneself even when no one is observing.”

It is about little Kanchan, a movie star’s daughter on the edge of youth, who is starstruck by the much older man she greets as “Kashinath Kaka” or “Uncle” in the biopic about the former Marathi cinema actor Dr. Kashinath Gahnekar. The song sounds eerily similar to Sawar Loon from Lootera.

3. Gori Tera Gaon

Yesudas
Chitchor, 1976, Hindi

Gori Tera Gaon is a subtly sweet hymn to basic, straightforward village life. Vinod, played by Amol Palekar, is singing in front of a small crowd, one eye on his ladylove Geeta (played by Zarina Wahab). When he performs the song, their own little secret, you can watch her facial expressions steadily altering.

4. Nee Neeli Kannullona

Gowtham Bharadwaj and Justin Prabhakaran
Dear Comrade, 2019, Telugu

Nee Neeli Kannullona is one of the best songs on Bharat Kamma’s Dear Comrade, released in 2019. The only instrumentation is a slowly strumming guitar and a background of konnakol, which nicely complements the lyrics.

Bobby is steadily falling for his next-door neighbor Lily, through her everyday domestic tasks, over chai and biscuits, and watching her play with the kids, according to the words.

5. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga

Kumar Sanu, RD Burman
1942: A Love Story, 1994, Hindi

Is there any need for an introduction to this classic song? Naren, a free-spirited young man, is singing about Rajjo, a lovely girl he’d just met, and a slew of emotions wash over him at once. Is she a blossoming rose, a poet’s muse, a ray of sunshine, or a prancing doe in the woods?

Or perhaps as terrified as a silently blazing flame in a temple’s sanctum sanctorum? He doesn’t want anything else other than to revel in the fact that he may be in love.

6. Jag Ja

Suresh Wadkar
Omkara, 2006, Hindi

The feeling is described in this song composed by Gulzar Sahib when one stirs in a lover’s safe embrace hanging on the edge of sleep and waking. We observe a role reversal here, with the words intended to wake up rather than to go to sleep. Jag Ja is a quasi-lullaby with minimal instrumentation, basic lyrics, and Suresh Wadkar’s soothing voice.

7. Surmai Ankhiyon Mein

Ilaiyaraaja
Sadma, 1993, Hindi

In this poignant performance from Sadma, directed by Balu Mahendra, Gulzar Sahab’s wordplay is at work once more. The song appears to be a lullaby on the surface, but upon closer inspection, it is a sweet yet sorrowful declaration of love.

Somu sings Reshmi to sleep, deeply in love with her but unable to show it owing to their unusual circumstances. The song “Kanne Kalaimaane” was repeated from Mahendra’s original film Moondram Pirai (which was also directed by Mahendra). It was also famous Tamil lyricist Kannadason’s last song before he died in 1981.

8. Soona Mann Ka Angan

Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal
Parineeta, 2005, Hindi

Soona Mann Ka Angan translates as “my mind’s desolate courtyard.” This is a pathos-filled song about yearning for lost love and reminiscing about simpler times.

It cries out for two grownups caught in the storm of life to become children once more, using imagery of jingling anklets and courtyard swings with cheerful Rabindrasangeet notes.
