Union Minister Narayan Rane was arrested from the Sangameshwar area in Ratnagiri. He was taken into arrest by a special Nashik Police team that left in the morning for Ratnagiri. Union Minister and Rajya Sabha member Narayan Rane is a familiar name in Maharashtra politics. He was arrested for his controversial comment against CM Uddhav Thackeray.
He made the comments at a Jan aashirwad rally on Monday evening at a hall in Mahad, Raigad. He said that it was shameful for the Chief Minister of a state to be unaware of years of India’s Independence. He turned back to enquire about the years of independence in his speech.
The union minister further said if he would have been there then he would have given him a tight slap. He was arrested because his pre-arrest bail petition got rejected. FIRs have been registered against him over his comments. His lawyers tried to get interim protection for him over the arrest in a case filed to Cyber police In Nashik. The DM of Ratnagiri stated that he was arrested when all the legal alternatives were exhausted.
The BJP members and the national President of BJP condemned the arrest of Mr Narayan Rane. BJP MLC Prasad who was with the Union Minister at the time of his arrest said that he was mishandled during his arrest. The former CM Devendra Phadnavis said that the party doesn’t support such statements but they stand with Mr Narayan Rane. He also criticized the arrest as a misuse of police power.
The BJP claims that it was an instance of hate politics. Mr Narayan Rane earlier on Tuesday upheld his statements that he has not committed any crime. Mr Rane was granted bail by a Mahad court. The court said that his arrest was justified but the custodial interrogation was not important. On the other hand, Shiv Sena workers protested at different parts of the state against the Union Minister.
BJP and ShivSena had been partners in Maharashtra politics by forming a government in a coalition for several terms. But, otherwise, they share a strained relationship. The ideological similarity of Hindutva brings the two parties together and also turns them against each other.
Before the Lok Sabha elections of 1989, BJP and ShivSena fought their first pre-poll together. From the BJP, its key member Pramod Mahajan established political ties with the Sena because he had dual relations with ShivSena founder Mr Bal Thackeray. At that time, BJP fought at the national platforms and was in search of an opportunity to strengthen its base in the state. It tried to develop its hold in the region with the help of ShivSena. On the other hand, ShivSena wanted to use the Hindutva appeal of BJP to its benefit in congress-dominated politics.
BJP fought on more seats in the lower house of the Parliament and Shiv Sena got a bigger share in Assembly polls. ShivSena won 52 out of 183 seats and BJP got 42 out of 104. The Post for the leader of the opposition went to Manohar Joshi. However, soon Chhagan Bhujbal from his party challenged him and joined Congress in 1991. The saffron partners allegedly impacted the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid and 1993 blasts in Bombay. They created a campaign against Congress in the State elections of 1995. ShivSena won 73 and BJP won 65 seats. The ShivSena head Bal Thackeray’s system was that the partner with the highest number of seats shall get the post of the Chief Minister. So, Mr. Joshi got the top position and Gopinath Munde from BJP became the Deputy and Home Minister.
The relationship between the two parties was strained frequently. It became more difficult when Raj Thackeray, the then alleged heir to Bal Thackeray was accused to conspire and force Ramesh Kini for Suicide. Later, he was acquitted in the Ramesh Kini case.
In the state elections of 1999, both the political parties contested the elections together. But, both tried to defeat the candidates of each other because the party with more seats would have got the Chief Minister post. ShivSena got 69 seats and BJP got 56 seats. They also tried to grab other seats. Still, there were talks that BJP’s Gopinath Munde wanted to be the CM.
There were negotiations between the two parties with no conclusion for 23 days. Meanwhile, Sharad Pawar’s NCP that had separated from Congress a few months ago, formed a government with Congress and its Vilasrao Deshmukh became Chief Minister.
There cropped up several issues between the saffron allies over National and state issues. The BJP also insisted on a 100% BJP government in Maharashtra. Bal Thackeray commented on it that the BJP was only blooming in the state due to Shiv Sena.
Both the parties came together for the 2004 state elections. ShivSena got 62 seats and BJP secured 54. Narayan Rane, a former CM of BJP and Shiv Sena government, joined the congress with many MLAs. The bid for the position of Leader of Opposition was also not successful for BJP.
In 2009, Congress-NCP again gained power and the BJP-Sena score fell. However, for the first time, BJP secured 46 seats in the elections. It had 2 more seats than ShivSena gaining it the seat of the leader of the opposition.
In 2002, during the riots of Gujarat Mr Bal Thackeray supported then CM Narendra Modi claiming that if he resigned then BJP will lose Gujarat. In 2014, BJP decided to contest the elections on their own owing to the massive Modi wave in 25 years.
Even congress and NCP separated. Shiv Sena won 63 seats and BJP got 122 seats. Mr. Devendra Phadnavis from BJP became the CM. Shiv Sena decided not to join the government but later joined the Government with 12 portfolios. It did not end the frequent differences between the two parties over national and state issues.
In the 2019 elections, BJP and ShivSena fought the elections together and got a great win in the National elections. In the assembly elections, BJP got a bigger share of seats and claimed the CM post.
Still, Shiv Sena was adamant that this time the CM should be from its party and the negotiations brought no results. In the end, it went on to form the government with the coalition of Congress and NCP in return for its claim on the CM post. Since then the relations of both the parties have been butter and time and again they confront each other on state and national issues.
