At 45, Pushkar Singh Dhami was sworn in as the youngest 11th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. After his predecessor, Tirath Singh Rawat, quit his position as the Chief Minister.
The MLA who had served two terms from Khatima, in Uttarakhand, was sworn as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. Governor Baby Rani Maurya administered the oath along with eleven other members at Raj Bhavan in Dehradun.
Pushkar Singh Dhami is said to be the youngest Chief Minister of Uttarakhand at 45 and the third candidate to be elected for the position Dhami is the son of an ex-serviceman and was born in 1975 in Pithoragarh District. During his school years, he was involved with the National Cabinet Corps and the National Service Scheme.
He began his political career by working in the student political wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Singh (RSS) group, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1990. He worked his way into the prominent hierarchy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
His education has been in the field of law, he holds an LLB degree from Lucknow University. He performed the role of an officer on special duty (OSD) and political mentor to the former chief minister of Uttarakhand, Bhagat Singh Koshyari.
He is reportedly close to the Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh. He was elected as the Uttarakhand Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha president, the youth wing of BJP, in 2002 and 2008. He also served as the vice president of the state’s party twice, from 2016 to 2020 and then from 2020 onwards.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Dhami in a tweet and extended his support to the ministerial team. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bharatiya Janata Party President J P Nadda congratulated Dharmi. He belongs from the Kumaun region while his predecessors were from Garhwal.
He changed the portfolio of his ministers and provided them with a cabinet rank. Dhan Singh Rawat, Yatishwaranand, and Arya were ministers under Tirath Singh Rawat’s government, they both now have been promoted to the cabinet rank.
Dhami had met with the senior members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with colleague Satpal Maharaj. He also visited his predecessors Tirath Singh Rawat, Trivendra Singh Rawat, and B.C. Khanduri.
The new Chief Minister stated his priority will be helping those who have been economically affected due to the Covid-19 crisis. He said he will be creating job opportunities and filling vacant positions for people who have been adversely affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He will be working alongside the youth and older members for key development projects. He also ascertained the need for resuming tourism in the Char Dham Yatra.
Madan Kaushik, the president of Uttarakhand Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stated that under the leadership of the newly elected Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, the party will be victorious by more than 60 seats in the state assembly election in 2022.
Addressing a ministerial meeting, he stated that the state in the past four-and-a-half years has worked on development projects positively and will continue under the newly elected government at an uninterrupted pace.
The meeting was attended by the new Chief Minister Dhami, along with cabinet ministers, Dushyant Kumar, the BJP national general secretary in charge of party affairs in Uttarakhand, and Ajay Kumar, the general secretary.
However, it was reported that top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders were upset over Dhami’s appointment. It is alleged that some members of the party believed that an experienced and senior leader should be elected instead of a two-term MLA.
However, while speaking to the media before his ceremony, Dhami stated that the party has elected him, and with this opportunity, he will serve the party.
SMA Kazmi, Dehradun’s political analyst has said the BJP has elected a comparatively young politician, pertaining to experience in party politics. He stated that creating rapport with senior party colleagues will be a challenge.
According to the former chief minister, Trivendra Singh Rawat, Dhami was unanimously elected by 56 members of the BJP’s legislature party.
He ascertained that the new chief minister will attain new heights in the development and leadership of the Uttarakhand constituency.
