Film buffs have benefited greatly from the internet. With a single mouse click, we can now access not only different film reviews and analyses but also videos detailing how our favorite films were made and how we may copy our favorite auteurs.

The video essay is one trend that has exploded in popularity over the last few years. YouTubers such as Nerdwriter1 and Lessons from the Screenplay, who are recognized for their videos that delve deeply into the development of movies, provide new insights into cinema.

Table of Contents
  • We've compiled a list of seven YouTube channels that every film fan and aspiring filmmaker should be aware of:
    • 1. Now You See It
    • 2. CineFix
    • 3. Filmmaker IQ
    • 4. Renegade Cut
    • 5. Channel Criswell
      • 6. Film Riot
    • 7. ScreenPrism

We’ve compiled a list of seven YouTube channels that every film fan and aspiring filmmaker should be aware of:

1. Now You See It

Now You See It is described as a collegiate cinema analysis class without the lecture halls, essay requirements, or student loan burdens.

It manages to be both educational and extremely entertaining while exploring thematic strategies and clichés in film, from the various applications of chess to acting improvisation. Take a look at this video about physical injuries in movies:

2. CineFix

The video listicles created by Cineflix are among the most popular on YouTube. While some may consider the channel to be blatantly mainstream, it is simple and enjoyable to watch.

The topics range from the most precise, such as a list of the best movie props, to the broadest, such as a list of the best ‘ movies.’ The ‘What’s the Difference?’ series, in which they aggregate all of the differences between an adapted picture and its source material, is one we would recommend.

3. Filmmaker IQ

Look no further for some of the more technical components of filmmaking. Filmmaker IQ is a one-stop shop for all you need to know about filmmaking, from the history of lenses to the introduction and evolution of color in films.

They do videos on stuff that are truly quirky and mind-boggling now and then. Have you ever wondered if our pets watch television in the same manner that humans do? Or what economic role does popcorn play at movie theatres? They know what to do.

4. Renegade Cut

Renegade Cut, a web series by Leon Thomas, is an instructional web series about the philosophy represented by specific films.

The channel dissects films from a sociopolitical perspective, critically examining the beliefs they depict and occasionally spread.

This channel covers a wide range of topics, from nonhuman animal ethics in Okja to the application of Marxist theory in Metropolis. Despite being one of the less well-known channels on this list, it is unquestionably one of the more intelligent.

5. Channel Criswell

Lewis Bond, another well-known video essayist, is noted for his deep analyses of the individual approaches of greats such as Ozu, Stanley Kubrick, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Denis Villeneuve.

What began as a small review channel quickly grew into one of the most popular places for in-depth film analysis. Take a look at this 20-minute documentary about David Lynch’s work.

6. Film Riot

This channel, hosted by filmmaker Ryan Connolly, offers almost all of the information you’ll need to make your film. This DIY channel is a must-follow for any aspiring filmmakers, covering everything from directing to editing to designing your movie poster.

Connolly’s style is straightforward and easygoing, and there’s a lot to learn as he peppers instructional films with examples from his filmmaking career.

7. ScreenPrism

Not sure what No Country For Old Men’s finale meant? Or what do the various houses in the Game of Thrones universe represent? This channel will put your fears to rest.

They also offer well-crafted character profiles from some of our favorite TV episodes and films. Our particular favorite is the ‘You Know It’s…’ series, in which they examine a filmmaker’s aesthetic and then list clichés that appear in their whole body of work.
