What a CIBIL score is

A CIBIL score is a three-digit number from TransUnion CIBIL that sums up your repayment record. It ranges from 300 to 900. CIBIL says a score above 700 is generally considered good, while many lenders prefer 750 or more for the best interest rates on home loans and personal loans.

The score comes from your credit information report (CIR). The CIR has two parts that matter: the accounts section, listing every loan and card with its payment history, and the enquiries section, listing every time a lender checked your report after you applied for credit.

The four credit bureaus in India

CIBIL is the best known, but lenders report to all four RBI-licensed credit information companies. Your score can differ slightly across them because each uses its own model.

Equifax India equifax.co.in

Your right to a free report

The RBI directed credit bureaus in 2016 to give every individual one free full credit report, including the score, once every calendar year (January to December). It is available in electronic form after you verify your identity. That means you can get four free reports a year, one from each bureau, and space them out to check your record every three months.

Bureau websites also sell paid subscriptions with monthly updates. You do not need one to see your score. Look for the free annual report option, which is usually less prominent than the paid plans.

How to check your CIBIL score for free

  1. Go to the bureau’s official website and find the free credit report or free score option.
  2. Enter your name, date of birth, mobile number, email and PAN. Some bureaus also accept Aadhaar or other ID details.
  3. Verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. You may be asked a few questions about your existing loans to confirm identity.
  4. Download the report. Some bureaus show it instantly, others email it within a day.

Many banks, credit card apps and loan platforms also show a free score. These are fine for a quick look, but they often pull from one bureau and may ask for consent to market products to you. For a full report, go to the bureau directly.

Use only official sites and apps. Your credit report carries your PAN, address and loan details, and fake “free score” pages are a common way to harvest that data. If you have signed up on many such sites, it is worth checking whether your email was in a data breach.

Does checking your own score lower it?

No. When you check your own report, it is a soft enquiry and does not affect the score. Hard enquiries happen when a bank or lender pulls your report after you apply for a loan or card. Several hard enquiries in a short period can pull your score down because they suggest you are hungry for credit.

What pushes your score up or down

  • Payment history: late or missed EMIs and card dues do the most damage. Even one payment that is 30 days overdue shows up.
  • Credit utilisation: the share of your card limit you use. Financial advisers commonly suggest staying under 30% of the limit; heavy use above 50% tends to hurt.
  • Paying only the minimum due: it avoids a late fee but leaves a large balance, which keeps utilisation high and interest piling up.
  • Length of credit history: older accounts help. Closing your oldest credit card can shorten your history.
  • Credit mix: a mix of secured loans (home, car) and unsecured credit (cards, personal loans) is viewed better than only one type.
  • Loans you guarantee: if the person you stood guarantor for defaults, it can show on your report too. The same applies to add-on cards.

How fast your report updates now

From 1 January 2025, the RBI requires lenders to send credit data to bureaus every fortnight, as of the 15th and the last day of each month. Earlier it was monthly. So if you clear a loan or a card balance, it should reflect on your report within a few weeks rather than a couple of months.

Under the RBI’s January 2025 master directions, bureaus must also send you an SMS or email when a lender accesses your report, and lenders must alert you before reporting a default. Make sure your current mobile number and email are updated with your bank.

How to fix an error in your report

Mistakes happen: a closed loan still shown as active, a card you never took, or a wrong overdue amount. Raise a dispute on the bureau’s website with supporting documents such as a loan closure letter or no-dues certificate.

Under RBI rules, the complaint must be resolved within 30 calendar days. If it is not, you are entitled to compensation of Rs 100 for every day of delay, shared between the lender and the bureau responsible. Lenders get 21 days to correct data once informed. If the bureau does not respond, you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman through the RBI’s complaint portal.

When to check

Check your score at least once a year, and three to six months before applying for a home loan, car loan or any large borrowing. That leaves time to clear dues, bring down card usage and fix errors. If you are planning a loan for a big expense such as a wedding, our piece on planning wedding costs with a marriage loan covers the budgeting side.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check my CIBIL score for free?

Yes. RBI rules entitle every individual to one free full credit report with score per calendar year from each credit bureau, including TransUnion CIBIL.

What is a good CIBIL score?

CIBIL says a score above 700 is generally good. Many lenders prefer 750 or more for their best loan rates.

Does checking my CIBIL score reduce it?

No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry. Only hard enquiries made by lenders when you apply for credit can affect it.

How long does it take to update a CIBIL score after repaying a loan?

Since 1 January 2025 lenders must report data fortnightly, so changes usually reflect within a few weeks.

What can I do if my credit report has an error?

Raise a dispute with the bureau with supporting documents. It must be resolved within 30 days, failing which you get Rs 100 per day as compensation. You can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman.
