Chingish Khan, a PhD scholar at Jawahar Lal Nehru University was arrested on sedition charge by the for his article in which he criticized the Manipur Government. His article “Political ploy to push Muslims into marginalization” was published in a local daily ‘Ichel Express’.
Khan who is pursuing his research in History belongs to a Pangal Muslim community in the states of Manipur. The police detained Khan on Wednesday and, an FIR was lodged against him on Thursday, April 9.
In the article, he vehemently criticized the BJP government for the discrimination against the Pangal Muslims of the states. Citing the eviction of near 500 houses in Khetri Bengoon Awa Ching, he wrote in his article about the hardships faced by the Pangals (Muslims of Manipur) when they had to leave without any rehabilitation.
Khan has been very vocal about national issues. He pointed out ‘the flawed and biased implementation’ of Manipur Conservation of Wetland and Paddy Land Act of 2014.
The police officials claimed that the article is “inciting communal disharmony”.
Khan was produced before a local magistrate in Imphal this Friday after which he was sent to police custody for six days under sections 124A/153505 and 120B of Indian Penal Codes.
