PM yesterday addressed the nation and extended the already 21 days long lockdown to May 3rd.
He talked about how India is doing so much better than the rest of the countries and made some claims. However, some of his claims do not appear to be true. He said that much before the COVID-19 patients' toll had reached 100, India made 14 days isolation mandatory for those coming in from abroad. But then the question is how the Tablighi Jamaati weren't caught and kept in isolation albeit a lot of them were from hotspots like Malaysia. At the same time why wasn't Kanika Kapoor kept in isolation and managed to attend parties.
He also said that long before there were any corona cases in the country, India had started screening people coming from COVID-19 affected countries. But this also turned out to be incorrect, a number of people have claimed that they or their relatives were allowed to enter the country without any screening from COVID-19 affected countries like America, UK, Malaysia and others even when cases started to appear in India.
In a letter to chief secretaries of all States and Union Territories, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba said the gap in the monitoring of international passengers "may seriously jeopardise the efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19", provided many amongst the persons who have tested positive so far in India have a history of international travel.
"However, there appears to be a gap between the number of international passengers who need to be monitored by the States/UTs and the actual number of passengers being monitored," Gauba wrote in his letter.
He also said that 15 lakh air travellers have entered India in the last two months after the first case of COVID-19 in the country.
India ranks very low when it comes to the number of coronavirus tests. We have so far tested only 2,00,000 people for a population of 1.3 billion. This technically means that we have not even tested all the International passengers coming in.
PM said that India is doing much better in fighting this pandemic than many other countries, if that is the case, why doctors don't have enough PPEs and ventilators?
These are some of the questions that are to be asked after his speech yesterday.
