We all enjoy a little mix-and-match, so it’s no surprise that most of our songs feature Hinglish lyrics. The trend, on the other hand, isn’t new; it’s been going on for a while. Songs featuring English lyrics appeared in the late 1950s and early 1960s, such as Mera naam chin chin chu (Howrah Bridge, 1958) and C-A-T, cat… cat maane billi (Dilli Ka Thug, 1958).
Popular songs like My name is Anthony Gonsalves (Amar Akbar Anthony, 1977), My heart is pounding (Julie, 1975), and Monica… oh my darling! continued this trend in the 1970s. Caravan (Caravan, 1971). With SP Balasubramaniam crooning I don’t know what you say (Ek Duuje Ke Liye, 1981) and Kishore Kumar singing in terrible English in Naa jaiyo Pardes from Karma, the 1980s weren’t far behind (1986).
With songs like My adorable darling (Main Khiladi Tu Anari, 1994), What is mobile number (Haseena Maan Jayegi, 1999), and Why did you break my heart (Haseena Maan Jayegi, 1999), our very own Anu Malik followed this trend in the 1990s (Akele Hum Akele Tum, 1995). The new millennium has seen an unexpected increase in the number of songs containing English lyrics. Shaan has performed a variety of songs, including One Love, Rock n Roll Soniye, My Dil Goes Mmmm, and That’s All I Really Want to Do. This is a trend that is here to stay. So here we look at the songs which took our hearts away with their English verses.
1. My Name is Anthony Gonsalves
You can hear funky and strange sounds play in the background, attempting to raise the craziness of this song to new heights. When Amitabh Bachchan from ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ speaks in English and no one understands him, it reminds us of lying sleepily on the last bench of a chemistry class and then singing in Hindi, transporting us to a nostalgic 80s and 90s song.
2. Hare Ram Hare Ram
This song should be made the official Gen-Z bhakti song. It portrays the younger generation’s feelings as they are charmed by her looks and “wish if I could ever make you mine, everyone pray with me, all day, all night, hare ram hare ram, hare krishna hare ram”
3. Pretty Woman
It’s a lovely song with a pretty woman. It is such a lovely mix of rock and desi that it makes our heads bop every time. This song was written in a really pleasant manner, which is evident when you listen to it. One of our favourite songs to listen to and a perfect transition into pop music. This is a wonderfully enjoyable track that you’ll remember for a long time.
4. You Are My Soniya
Everyone drools over Hrithik’s club skills in this classic song from ‘K3G.’ It reminds us of when we were younger and thought we could simply pick up girls. “She’s What I Want, She’s What I Love, She’s Sent to Me from Heavens Above,” simply makes us want to fall in love in a cinematic manner and repeat the moments.
5. Chiggy Wiggy
This is a pretty upbeat tune that’s ideal for when you want to add some Bollywood flavour to your evening. The fusion of hip hop and bhangra in this song is incredibly cool, and A.R Rahaman’s music is fantastic. We’ve all sung the lines in our own unique ways while still enjoying the song. A fantastic song that still sounds brand new.

A great song for dancing alone at 3 a.m. or with your entire group. While reading this, we can feel everyone dancing. This song has never failed to make us groove a little, and the lyrics have been yelled at many parties, to the delight of all who have attended. This song is extremely enjoyable to listen to. It was so well produced, and even the lyrics were so well mastered together, it was a really well-created song.

This song will always be beautiful no matter how many times you listen to it. We’ve all sung the lyrics to this beautiful song incorrectly and fantasised about falling in love while it played in the background. The warmth of the song has been accentuated by Atif Aslam’s voice. Both the Hindi and English lyrics complement the music and mood of the song. It will always be a treasure.
