Kuwait National Assembly’s legal and legislative committee has drafted a foreign nationals quota bill which will affect a large number of Indians living in Kuwait. The bill may lead to the decline of the ex-pat population living in Kuwait. Only 15% of NRIs will be allowed to work in Kuwait as per the bill. Approximately 8 lakhs Indians will be forced to leave the country.

The population of Kuwait is 4.3 million that include 1.3 million Kuwaitis and 3 million ex-pats. The Indians is the largest ex-pat community in Kuwait which is around 1.45 million, quoting a Kuwaiti newspaper.

Coronavirus pandemic has affected the economy of Kuwait and has made situations worse there. That led to the decline in the oil prices to a very large extent and hence, the government started to think of foreigners leaving the country.

Kuwait’s Prime minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah said last month that they will make up the number of ex-pats living in the country from 70% to 30% of the population.

Government officials said that a large number of ex-pat population is illiterate or is just able to read and write and they don’t need unskilled ex-pat workers in their country.

Bill also contains different quotas for different nationalities. The bill will be transferred to the respective committee so that a comprehensive plan will be made.
