Amazon India has launched a skill development programme under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) across its warehouses in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

The company said in a statement that this initiative has been launched with a pilot program for 1,000 apprentices which will be scaled further. It also said that “The company aims at training youth whose learning journey or placement was impacted due to COVID-19 pandemic. Apprentices will be identified through various sources including NSDC Skilling Database and the NSDC – accredited training centres (DDU – GKY centres)”.

Amazon India Director of Human Resources, Swati Rustagi said in a statement that “For us, skilling is not only meaningful but a sustainable and long-term approach. We create many opportunities for the youth which will help them in getting secure and skilled employment in the future.”

This programme will run on a period of six-month, in this programme the apprentices will be trained for the roles of warehouse associates and process associates and for this they will receive a monthly payment under NAPS.

In this hard time of COVID-19, the training sessions will be conducted with preventive and safety measures including social distancing and regular sanitisation.

There will be classroom sessions and assessments held at the fulfilment centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. At the end of the programme, the apprentices will receive certificates for their 6-month training and after that, they will be eligible to be considered for part-time and full-time employment opportunities in the company.

In September 2019, Amazon India also started a training programme to create employment opportunities for young adults with autism and intellectual disabilities in partnership with an NGO, Sol’s ARC.

Amazon had recently promised to create one million new jobs in India through investment in technology, infrastructure and logistics. Besides this, the company had invested fresh funds of Rs 2,310 crore ($ 308.7 million) into one of its India units, Amazon Seller Services.
