New Delhi: The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2020, also known as the Shanghai Ranking, was released today, and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was included for the first time. The central university in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, was ranked in the 801-900 range by ARWU in 2020. AMU is ranked 8-9 in the national rankings, alongside Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT).
The ARWU Ranking 2020 is topped by Harvard University in the United States, followed by Stanford University in the United States and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
Professor Tariq Mansoor, Vice-Chancellor of AMU, said that being featured in ARWU 2020 is a testament to AMU’s success on all fronts.
“Excellent news for the entire AMU fraternity- AMU finds a place for 1st time in Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU 2020) topmost universities’ list. It’s a testament to our continued progress on all fronts, recognized at national and international levels,” VC tweeted.
One of the annual publications of world university rankings is the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking. Shanghai Jiao Tong University first compiled and published the league table in 2003, making it the first global university ranking with multiple indicators.
After 2009, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, a company focused on higher education that is not legally subordinated to any universities or government departments, has published and copyrighted ARWU every year. A board of international advisory made up of scholars and policy analysts was formed in 2011 to make recommendations.
