Arnab Goswami and the rat race of TRP boost
“Puchta hai Bharat”( a question often raised by R.Bharat news channel’s anchor Arnab Goswami) and apparently the most viewed show of all the media houses have now raised the brows of every viewer. People are mocking at his clichéd line. Now literally the entire nation wants to ask, how could you cheat your citizens? Also, do the nation really wants to know about the news that had been shown on the channel just to gain the TRP and not showing the actual news and issues of the country (Kya sach me puchta hai bharat).
Current development in the war that broke between ‘Republic TV’ and India Today TV after Param Bir Singh, the Mumbai Police Commissioner, announced that his department was investigating charges of rigging television TRP against Republic TV and two other channels. A video of journalists pursuing the co-founder and Editor-in-chief of Republic Bharat, Arnab Goswami as he speeds out of his residence is now trending on social sites. Arnab Goswami keeps on absconding when chased by others to confront allegations against him. Journalist Mustafa Shaikh from India Today TV was roughed up by Arnab’s security for crowding around his vehicle imitating his style of interrogation.
Earlier this same behaviour of being tight-lipped was observed when Stand-up Comedian Kunal Kamra heckled Goswami on a flight. Arnab is known for his shouting and asking people to come and talk to him and give him answers on his show, but always found muted when other people approach or ask him for even a conversation.
The hashtag #RepublicCheatsBharat and headlines like ‘Republic rigged ratings’ and ‘Cash for News TRP scandal’ were also run by India Today TV.
The Mumbai Police Commissioner announced to have uncovered a scam involving private TV channels exploiting their TRPs. The police commissioner said Republic TV and two other local Mumbai channels were found guilty of manipulating crucial data.
Goswami, in reaction to the allegations, claimed that India Today and not Republic TV were the names in the FIR filed in the case. India Today TV replied to this by an interview conducted with a senior Mumbai Police officer, who said that there is no connection found between the alleged scam and India Today TV during investigations.
On Thursday, Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh said police are investigating a scam of getting TRP’s fixed by manipulating the equipment used by India’s Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), which has the license to assess India’s television audience and will share more information about the same once the investigation will bring out more evidence and results.
The investigation discovered that in some of the household TV ‘Republic English news channel’ used to be on for hours where nobody was educated or could comprehend the English language.
