The mesmerizing city of Darjeeling in West Bengal has become a favorite amongst travelers since it enchanted the masses with the picturesque backdrop location of blockbuster Bollywood movies like Main Hoon Na and Barfi. With the majestic Kanchenjunga peak of the Himalayas in the background, the place will provide you with a soothing environment to enjoy your vacation with your loved ones. 

However, the popularity of Darjeeling has rapidly increased in the past three-four years, making the beautiful hill station a little crowded. So travelers nowadays are now opting to explore places that would provide them with the same vibe but also less visited.

1. Lava

Situated at an altitude of approximately 2350 meters above sea level, this beautiful town is 35 kilometers away from Kalimpong. The lush green forests of Lava are ideal if you want to trek alongside nature, bird watching, and exploration of wildlife.

Monasteries, pristine waterfalls, mesmerizing view of the majestic Kanchenjunga, rare red pandas, there is a lot to explore in Lava. The town is accessible through Dooars via Damdim road from NH31.

Reaching Lava would take around 3 hours from the nearest New Jalpaiguri railway station. The best time to visit is from September to June. 

2. Mirik 

Mirik is a picturesque tourist destination situated between the calm hills of Darjeeling at an elevation of 1767 meters. The name of the town comes from the Lepcha word ‘Mir-Yok’ that means ‘a place burnt by fire. The place is quite popular for its favorable climate and natural beauty.

The major attraction of the place is the Sumendu Lake which is covered by lush gardens on one side and green forests of pine trees on the other. Boating in the lake on quaint shikaras and pony riding are quite popular amongst the visiting tourists here.

The town is just around 50 kilometers away from the New Jalpaiguri Station and is easily accessible. The best time to visit the place is from March to June.

3. Lolegaon

As the meaning of the name of this Lepcha village, Lolegaon is a “happy place” for all the travelers that come here. It is situated at the far end of the Himalayan range at a height of 1675 meters.

This serene place is a paradise for tourists who love solitude and it also provides a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga peak.

Surrounded by dense forests of pine trees and orchids, the place is a treat for every nature lover. Snow-capped mountain peaks, wildflowers, and gorgeous weather are the main attraction in this village.

Lolegaon is easily accessible as it is located 124 kilometers away from the New Jalpaiguri station and would take you 4 hours to reach by car. The best time to visit Lolegaon is from September to June. 

West Bengal has a lot of hidden unexplored gems of places for you to visit apart from the mainstream destinations which are accessible across the year.
