The best movie villains are the ones audiences remember long after the hero’s victory. 1. The Joker (The Dark Knight)

Many critics still rank Heath Ledger’s Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight as the finest screen version of the character. He has no clear backstory, tells different stories about his scars, and wants chaos rather than money or power.

What makes him work is that he tests Batman’s moral code and that of Gotham’s citizens. Ledger died in January 2008, months before the film’s release, and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor posthumously.

2. Ernst Stavro Blofeld (James Bond)

Blofeld is the head of SPECTRE, the global criminal organisation in the Bond films, and is often shown stroking a white cat. His schemes include holding the world to ransom and setting the superpowers against each other.

Many actors have played him, including Donald Pleasence, Telly Savalas and Charles Gray. Christoph Waltz took the role in Spectre (2015) and No Time to Die (2021), in which Blofeld is killed. Even audiences new to Bond recognise the character through countless parodies.

3. Scorpio (Dirty Harry)

In Don Siegel’s 1971 thriller, Andy Robinson plays Scorpio, a sniper who terrorises San Francisco and demands ransom from the city. The character was loosely inspired by the real Zodiac Killer.

Scorpio is chilling because he looks ordinary and keeps escaping the system. His duel with Clint Eastwood’s Inspector Harry Callahan helped define the tough police thriller for decades.

4. Agent Smith (The Matrix)

Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith began as a program that polices the Matrix in the 1999 original. His flat voice and quiet contempt for humanity made him an instant favourite.

In the sequels he breaks free of the machines and copies himself into an army of Smiths, becoming a threat to both humans and machines. Jonathan Groff played a new version of the character in The Matrix Resurrections (2021).

5. Owen Shaw (Fast and Furious 6)

Luke Evans plays Owen Shaw, a former British special forces soldier who runs a crew of skilled drivers and mercenaries. He is a mirror image of Dom Toretto’s team, with the same skills but none of the loyalty.

In Fast and Furious 6 he is the main villain and ends the film badly injured. He returns in The Fate of the Furious (2017), where he works alongside his brother Deckard to help Dom, a turn that changed how fans saw the Shaw family.

6. Gabbar Singh (Sholay)

No list for Indian readers is complete without Gabbar Singh. Amjad Khan’s dacoit in Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay, written by Salim-Javed, remains the best-known villain in Hindi cinema nearly five decades after release.

His lines, such as “Kitne aadmi the?” (How many men were there?), are still quoted across the country. Gabbar’s unpredictable cruelty and almost playful manner set a template many later Bollywood villains followed.

7. Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men)

Javier Bardem’s hitman in the Coen brothers’ film carries a captive bolt pistol and sometimes decides a victim’s fate by tossing a coin. He speaks little and shows no emotion.

Bardem won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role. Chigurh is frightening because he cannot be bargained with, and the film refuses to give him a neat defeat.

8. Thanos (Avengers: Infinity War)

Josh Brolin’s Thanos, created through performance capture, believes that wiping out half of all life will save the universe from overpopulation. That twisted logic made him more than a purple giant.

In Avengers: Infinity War (2018) he actually wins, which was rare for a superhero blockbuster. Avengers: Endgame (2019) dealt with the aftermath, and the two films became among the highest-grossing ever.
