We all have heard about movies being inspired by Hollywood, Tollywood and real-life stories. Did you know that many Bollywood films have found inspiration in novels or books? There are many books that have inspired directors, filmmakers and screenwriters and gotten a chance to depict the story in visuals. Some of the famous novella based movies are:

1. Devdas

Devdas is a strange chapter in the literary history of India, both as a novel and film. The same story was told thrice on the big screen by Bollywood. All the three were based on a Bengali novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1917 novel ‘Devdas’.

 

2. Parineeta

Indian musical romantic drama film adaptation of the 1914 Bengali novel of the same name by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The film featured Vidya Balan in her Bollywood Debut. Sanjay Dutt and Saif Ali Khan in the lead roles. The films have several notable allusions to the Indian literature and cinema. It received four Filmfare Awards and One National Award for Best Debut.

3. Omkara

Vishal Bhardwaj has certainly brought Shakespeare’s classics to the mainstream audience. With adaptations that have a life of its own. Omkara is based on Othello is packed with strong performances, striking dialogues, amazing direction and Shakespearean essence. The movie was a critical and commercial success and won three national awards.

 

4. Maqbool

Vishal Bhardwaj’s love for Shakespeare is quite pretentious. The man love tragedy and Shakespeare very much. Maqbool is a 2003 Indian crime drama film starring Pankaj Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Tabu and Masumeh Makhija in an adaptation of the play Macbeth. Pankaj Kapoor won the National Award for the movie.

 

5. Haider

The movie that brought Shahid Kapoor back in Bollywood was based on Hamlet written by Shakespeare. The movie is directed by none other than Vishal Bhardwaj.  This is the third film that Bhardwaj has adapted from Shakespeare’s play. In this film, Vishal Bhardwaj showed the hamlet Plot and the contemporary Kashmir in a witty way.

 

6. Kai Po Che

Indian drama film Kai Po Che (the Kite has been cut) is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel ‘The 3 Mistakes of My Life’. The film featured Sushant Singh Rajput in his Bollywood debut. The story is telling about three friends who are growing up in India at the turn of the millennium set out to open a training academy to produce the countries next cricket stars. Amit Sadh and Rajkumar Rao were the co-stars with Sushant Singh Rajput in the film.

7. Guide

The movie Guide is based on the critically acclaimed novel The Guide written by famous writer and storyteller RK Narayan. The iconic movie starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. To make the movie more interesting, the end of the movie and novel are a little different. The guide reached on to win many National Awards.

 

8.  3 Idiots

This movie is adapted from the best seller novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. This movie broke all the box office records and became the highest-grossing Bollywood movie of all time worldwide. After watching this movie, we learn some important things like don’t run behind the success, achieve excellence first, the success will automatically come looking for you. Be always creative in your answers, work and things you do which helps you become more capable of your own. Students loved this movie a lot because who doesn’t want an idol to help them and support them for their aspirations.

 

9. Fitoor

The movie is a modern adaptation of Charles Dickens ‘ The Great Expectations.’ Abhishek Kapoor’s film ‘Fitoor’ was a 2016 release starring Aditya Roy Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. The movie follows the journey of Noor (Aditya) and Firdaus (Katrina) as they fall in love and face obstructions in love. The movie was not so hit on the box office but visuals, the royalty and the set were a treat to the eyes.

 

10. Lootera

Lootera was Vikramaditya Motwane’s directed movie from the year 2013. Starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha. Even though it is very different from the original text, it was an adaptation to the short story of O’Henry named The Last Leaf.

11. Dil Bechara

The upcoming movie Dil Bechara is also an adaptation of the book ‘THE Fault In Our Stars’ by John Green. The movie casts are Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi. It will be releasing on 24 July 2020 on digital platform Disney+ Hotstar. It is the last movie by Shushant Singh Rajput. The trailer has already broken all the records on youtube.
