Congress to bear rail expense of migrant workers: Sonia Gandhi

Congress President, Sonia Gandhi on Monday announced that the Congress Committees in every state will bear the expenses of the migrant workers who are stranded away from home amid the lockdown.

Gandhi condemned the Centre for being indifferent to the hardships of the labourers to charge them for their railway travel despite their sufferings in the lockdown.

"The Indian National Congress has, therefore, taken a decision that every Pradesh Congress Committee shall bear the cost for the rail travel of every needy worker and migrant labourer and shall take necessary steps in this regard. This will be the Indian National Congress' humble contribution in service of our compatriots and to stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with them", Gandhi said.

Congress has been raising this issue since the lockdown began. Sonia Gandhi said that there should be maintenances for the safe and free rail travel of these workers to their homes but the government has chosen to ignore it.

Targeting the Centre, Sonia Gandhi said that the workers and labourers are the ambassador of the nation's growth. They are the backbone of the economy and their hard work and sacrifice are the foundation of the nation and the government is not recognizing its responsibility towards them.

Gandhi went on asking the government of its responsibilities when there are lakhs of migrant workers that are languishing in different parts of the country, wishing to get back home. The fact that the Central Government and the Rail Ministry are charging them for tickets in these times is rather disturbing, she further added.

She also said that after post-partition this is the first time, India has witnessed such a tragedy with workers and labourers having to walk on foot for hundreds of kilometers without any food or money.
