Taking a historic decision, Pakistan has passed a law to impose a ban on the dowry system. The Minister of Religious Affairs of Pakistan decided to make it illegal for the groom to ask for dowry from the bride’s family. With this, Pakistan becomes the first Islamic country to impose restrictions on the dowry system.
According to the tradition of the dowry system, the groom’s family asks for expensive things such as cars, furniture, properties and also a huge amount of cash from the bride’s family. In many cases, they harass the bride if their demands are not fulfilled. In some cases, brides get killed for the same.
After the new law passed by the government, the dowry will only include the clothes of the brides and bedsheets. The maximum amount of dowry given to the bride will not exceed four tola gold. Even guests attending the wedding ceremony, will not be allowed to give presents with the price of more than PKR 1,000.
The law has been implemented in all provinces including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh.
The decision, taken by the government to ban dowry gains appreciations from the people in Pakistan and all across the world.
