India Gets Its 1st International Emmy Best Drama Award For ‘Delhi Crime’

Finally after 2 months of a wait since its nomination, Netflix India’s Original web-series ‘Delhi Crime’ bagged the Best Drama Series title at 48th International Emmy Awards. It is not only a joyous moment for just Delhi Crime team but also the whole of India which has not seen any win in the recent past in any of the categories.

Although, the actual credit goes to the Indo-Canadian director Richie Mehta who himself wrote the script describing the actual event of that heinous incident of rape of 23-year-old physiotherapy student who was brutally raped in a moving bus by six men on the chilling winter night of 16 December 2012 from the perspective of investigation done by the Delhi Police.

The horrific incident shook the nation to its core when her dead body was found lying abandoned in some corner of the capital. The 7 hours long series discloses the discourse that underwent in the aftermath of the incident to crack down on the absconding rapists.

The show that released in 2019 received a massive amount of acclaims from across the board for its brilliant making and execution of the plot based on a real-life incident. The Best about the show was that it underlined the general notion of the public who sit back at home and just pass the comments on the policing nature of forces in such crimes but can’t see how tough the investigation is.

The highlight of the show was Shefali Shah, the lead character, who effectively portrayed the role of Vartika Chaturvedi which was based on the former DP DCP Chaaya Sharma who cracked the case within 72 hours of the incident.

During the virtual felicitation, director Mehta took the opportunity of award acceptance to honour all the women who silently suffer from the violence inflicted upon them by men, but also to those who stand up against the criminals and fight them with all might.

As soon as the news of Delhi Crime taking away the Best Drama Title at Emmy’s came out, netizens spilled praises on Twitter without any delay and many from the industry also came up to congrats the team of “Delhi Crime.”

Shefali Shah went awe for winning the best drama award and shared the recorded clip of the acceptance speech of Richie Mehta at the virtual ceremony, via her Instagram handle. She could be heard screaming OMG in the background of this short clip.

Another lead actor from the show was Adil Hussain who congratulated the team and his co-star Shefali Shah on Twitter.

There were two other Emmy nominees from India, Prime Video’s “Four More Shots Please” in Emmy best comedy series category and actor Arjun Mathur was the hope for best actor award for his role in “Made In Heaven” series.
