The release of Threads App In India, the mobile app by Meta, has caused waves in the app industry, achieving a significant milestone as per data collected by reputable measurement firm, Sensor Tower. The launch of Threads proved to be a remarkable success, with an astounding 40 million downloads worldwide on its debut day, surpassing previous records set in the past decade.

Breaking down the downloads by operating system, Android took the lead, accounting for 75% of the total downloads, while iOS accounted for the remaining 25%. In terms of global distribution, India and Brazil emerged as the dominant players, capturing 22% and 16% of the overall downloads, respectively. The United States also made a notable contribution, amassing around 5.5 million downloads.
Threads’ opening performance surpassed notable games like Pokemon GO and Call of Duty Mobile, both of which garnered fewer than 20 million downloads on their respective launch days. When compared to other recently premiered social media applications, Threads emerged as the clear leader.
For instance, its closest competitor, Truth Social, managed only approximately 144,000 downloads on its launch day on February 21, 2022. Leading the pack in terms of worldwide Monthly Active Users (MAUs) are social media giants Facebook and Instagram, followed by popular platforms such as TikTok, Snap Inc., Twitter, and BeReal.
Examining the user base of Threads reveals interesting insights. A significant 96% of Threads users were found to be concurrently active on Instagram.
Additionally, notable overlaps were observed with WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter, with 80%, 58%, and 56% of Threads users also using these platforms, respectively. Instagram showed similar engagement, with 79% of its users active on WhatsApp. Twitter exhibited an 83% overlap with Instagram and a 49% overlap with Facebook.
In the United States, Threads accounted for 14% of all app installations on the launch day. The impact was even more pronounced in the United Kingdom and Brazil, where Threads contributed to 20% and 26% of overall installs, respectively.
Analyzing the demographics of Threads users using Sensor Tower’s mobile device panel revealed a predominantly male user base, comprising 68% of the total user population, while 32% identified as female. In terms of age groups, the highest concentration of male users fell within the 25 to 35-year-old bracket, accounting for 28% of the engagement.
Users aged 18 to 25 represented 11% for males and just over 5% for females. Users above the age of 45 were in the minority, with males at 3% and females at less than 2%.
The launch of Threads App has truly made a mark in the app world, with India taking the lead in downloads and setting a new record. The app’s impressive performance and its impact on the user base of other social media platforms highlight its growing popularity and potential for success in the future.
