The Maharashtra government on Saturday announced to provide financial assistance of 2000 rupees to each registered construction worker in the state.
This is a one-time economic help. The money will directly be sent to the bank accounts of 12 lakh workers through direct benefit transfer.
"According to the discussions held at the meeting of the chief minister, deputy chief minister, labor minister and concerned officials, financial assistance of ₹2,000 were decided to deposit the account in a DBT manner, "Dilip Walse Patil, Maharashtra cabinet minister for labour, and excise, posted on Twitter.
Construction workers have to face a lot of problems to meet the basic necessities of life as they do not get work every day, he further added.
The order came as the result of hundreds of labourers gathering at Bandra railway station and demanding to be sent back home.
The decision was taken in a meeting attended by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, his deputy Ajit Pawar, Walse-Patil and other senior bureaucrats. Maharashtra CM on Friday also announced the restarting of some industrial and commercial activities from April 20 solidified on observation with the criteria which are in place to fight coronavirus.
On Friday, the state government also permitted more than 1 lakh migrant sugarcane workers to retreat to their villages. Transportation of these labourers will be the responsibility of Sugar mill owners. They will have to seek necessary permissions from the state. The workers will also have to go through medical tests for COVID-19.
Out of 22.70 lakh, registered workers only 12.18 will be aided for they are active. The state has also permitted all urgent pre-monsoon works.
