A newly constructed bridge has collapsed in Kishanganj Bihar following a rise in the water level of Kankai River. The bridge was built by the Rural Works Department in the Patharghatti panchayat of Dighalbank block at a cost of Rs 1.42 crore. The incident has been reported in Goabari village on Thursday.
The construction of the bridge started in June, last year. It was ready in a year’s time but the inauguration was yet to be done. Still, the bridge was in use for over a month by the locals of the village.
However, it collapsed all of a sudden due to the rise in the water level of Kanki river.
The villagers made allegations that there has been a huge corruption in the construction of the bridge and that is the real reason behind the collapse of the bridge.
While speaking to ANI, Hasan Javed, a local resident, said, “There is a road at a certain distance which remains broken and we kept requesting the District Magistrate and Sub-Divisional Magistrate to built it to stop the river connection from here but it wasn’t built due to which the river flower and the pull washed away. All the bridges should be inspected. The authorities are not listening and this is a complete case of corruption.”
Meanwhile, locals said that an inquiry must be set up to probe into the matter and to find out the real reason.
RJD leader, Tejashwi Yadav has accused Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and called him a ‘Bhisma Pitamah’ of corruption.
After the bridge was damaged, Nirmal Kumar, the Superintendent Engineer of the Rural Works Department, visited the spot and said that necessary investigation will be held into the case and the culprits will be punished.
Though, this is not the first case of this kind in Bihar. In recent past, Bihar has witnessed several such cases where various bridges have collapsed before their inauguration or just after the few days of their inauguration.
For instance, in the month of July Sattarghat bridge had washed away in Gopalganj Bihar, just 29 days after it was inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
The Sattarghat bridge was constructed at the cost of Rs 263 crore.
