Politics of Pandemic – Centre Vs Mamta Banarjee

Right now we are in the grip of an unanticipated crisis and the world is doing its best to get out of it. But the Indian governments are busy playing their politics. Centre and the West Bengal government are busy accusing each other of the coronavirus crisis in the state.

The State government has blamed the Centre of selectively targeting the state, while the Centre accused that West Bengal has been non-transparent with disclosing data related to Covid-19 cases and testing of samples.

This has been going on for some days now. It began on Monday, when the Union Home Ministry announced the sending of six Inter-ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) to different areas of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Rajasthan in order to assess the coronavirus crisis and lockdown regulations, and suggest remedial measures to the Centre in a report.

However, this decision by the Centre didn’t go very well with the West Bengal government. The ruling party, Trinamool Congress(TMC), called these teams to be on an “adventure tourism”. Derek O’ Brien, Rajya Sabha MP of TMC alleged that the Centre didn’t tell the Chief Minister, Mamta Banerjee about the team and its objectives until three hours after its arrival in Kolkata.

Brien also said that the Central government is provoking the West Bengal citizenry. “I want to ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah why teams have not been sent to Gujarat which has five hotspots and 1,850 cases; to Tamil Nadu which has 22 hotspots and 1,477 cases; Uttar Pradesh which has nine hotspots and 1,900 cases?” He further said.

Mamta Banerjee has accused the Centre of not providing enough testing kits. She said only 2500 kits have been provided to the state, she also blamed the faulty kits to justify the low testing numbers in the state.

Banerjee wrote a letter to PM Modi, where she mentioned that the established procedure is to first take a briefing from the state government officials before opting for field visits.

Brien claimed that the state has been following all the ICMR guidelines. He asked the centre to leave politics out of a health emergency like this.

Babul Supriyo, Lok Sabha MP from WB, too attacked Mamta Banerjee and called her a VIRUS in a tweet.

WB Governor Jagdeep Dhankar requested the state government to co-operate with the central team to fight this health crisis. He has also alleged her for her massive failure in dealing with the coronavirus crisis, leading to a rapid increase in coronavirus cases.

He accused her of “appeasing” the minority community after she commented on the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi. Dhankar’s statements came in response to Banarjee accusing him of constantly interfering in the functioning of the state government.

He asked Banarjee to keep her politics aside and be in action mode to tackle the grave situation.
