He relocated to California with his father when his parents divorced in 1978. He dropped out of Santa Monica High School a few years later and relocated to New York to pursue his acting career full-time.

Career

Fortunately, RDJ found success after his SNL missteps. He made his name as James Spader’s sidekick in Tuff Turf and then as the bully in John Hughes’ Weird Science, alongside Anthony Michael Hall (who was also on SNL with him).

He was considered for the character of Duckie in John Hughes’ film Pretty in Pink, but John Cryer was cast in the role, and RDJ didn’t work with Molly Ringwald until The Pickup Artist.

Roles like this led to him being branded a part of the Brat Pack, which included Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy, all of whom appeared in John Hughes films. After all of this success, he landed his first Academy Award nomination for his role as Charlie Chaplin in 1992’s Chaplin.

Battle With Addiction

Downey began smoking marijuana at the age of six, shortly after making his cinematic debut, with his father’s blessing. Downey characterized it as an emotional tie between him and his father, and the two would eventually consume drugs together frequently.

Downey spent every night consuming booze and “making a thousand phone calls in chase of narcotics” as a result of his early drug exposure.

In the early 2000s, his drug use skyrocketed as a result of his celebrity. Due to his arrests, known drug addiction, and repeated visits to treatment, Robert Downey Jr. has lost multiple jobs. He chose to get therapy after his most recent arrest in April 2001. “It’s not that difficult to overcome these obviously horrible problems…hard what’s is to decide to do it,” Downey said shortly after.

He wasn’t able to return to the big screen until a few years following his recovery, in the film The Singing Detective (2003). Downey’s homecoming was only possible because his close friend Mel Gibson paid his insurance bond against his addictive conduct, paving the route for his return. Robert Downey Jr. was finally on the right track with the aid of friends and the willingness to change his life, and he has been drug-free since July 2003.

Career Comeback

It wasn’t simple for Downey to relaunch his career after overcoming his drug addiction. Downey was unhirable because the insurance firms utilised by productions gave him an exorbitant premium, which directors were unwilling to pay.

The second half of Downey’s career was made feasible by Mel Gibson, who had been Downey’s friend since “Air America.” For “The Singing Detective,” he personally paid Downey’s insurance bond. Other filmmakers were eager to engage Downey again once he completed the picture without incident.

Downey’s Career With Marvel

Downey was cast as Tony Stark in the blockbuster film Iron Man in 2007, thanks to the director Jon Favreau’s backing. At the time, the picture had low expectations, and many critics did not believe it would be a hit.

For the part, Downey Jr. was paid only $500,000. The film did, however, gross over $580 million at the box office, and its popularity was important in the development of the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU).

Avengers: Endgame was his final film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Downey was paid a total of $75 million for the film, which included his base salary and a portion of the earnings.
