The Arctic ice pack which is the sea ice cover of the Arctic Ocean and its vicinity is melting faster than expected. Scientists have claimed that all Arctic ice would be completely melted by the year 2035. Temperatures have been on an all-time high and the ice which melts every year during its peak in September doesn’t refreeze back in the dark winter period.
As per data released by climate scientists, over the last four decades, there has been an increase of 1°C every ten years and an increase of 1.5°C in Norway’s archipelago and the Barents Sea.
The shrinking ice cap is accelerating the increase in global temperatures and is already causing drastic floods and rains all over the world. As the Arctic ice melts and sea levels rise, millions are exposed to potential massive flooding and are at risk of getting displaced.
The alarming coastal erosion and fires in the Arctic are more frequent and one has to take action now. Since the start of satellite monitoring of the Arctic Ice in 1979, the Arctic has currently recorded an all-time low ice coverage for the whole season.
The ice lost in the Arctic and Greenland in the 2010s was six times greater than the ice lost in the 1990s.
As per reports, Greenland has already passed the “point of no return”, and the ice lost cannot be recovered now.
Earth has lost 28 trillion tonnes of ice since 1994 due to global heating. Ellesmere Island on the border of Canada has shrunk from 8600 sq. km at the beginning of the 20th century to 500 sq. km in 2020.
The successful implementation of the Paris Agreement is essential, and we need to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to ensure that the Arctic is packed with sea ice all year round.
The alarming statistics and the indifference of humans towards this disastrous fate show how consumed we are with our own lives and refuse to do anything for the Earth even if it spells our doom. We are in a climate crisis and are heading towards the extinction of the human race if we don’t take climate action now.
