Waiting for our thoughts on best films we watched in May 2024? Well, this month has been quite amusing with some new releases and taking a trip down memory lane to revive emotions with the old gems. As Netflix released its much-awaited One Day series version, we returned to the 2011 movie. Along the way, some new releases have received much praise from the audience, such as Laapataa Ladies and Srikanth. Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila is a chance for all the right reasons from the typical romantic love stories on the path of discovering oneself in the process.
Thoughts About Films We Watched In May 2024 –
1. One Day (2024) – Netflix Series
IMDb Rating: 8.1/10 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐
As Netflix released the One Day series, it reminded us of the 2011 movie starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. Revisiting the movie opened up healed wounds as the two actors seamlessly blended into their characters. Emma and Dexter form a memorable bond, and the story is as much a lesson about not waiting for the right moment as about being true to yourself.
Emma, being the literature book nerd she was, stood out to Dexter. The two were quite the opposite in their lives, which is the central reason for their being apart for a long time, but One Day portrays that love knows no boundaries and doesn’t care about differences. If you have watched the One Day series, we would suggest you go back to the OG film to rediscover the gem that this story is.
2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
IMDb Rating: 8.3/10 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐
An old movie that you might have heard about ample times now, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a rare, or should we say if not exaggerating, among the rarest romantic dramas we come across. Imagine that you and your partner have fallen apart so badly that you want to erase your relationship memories, basically erasing the person from your life — only for you to meet them again as soon as your memory erasure takes place.
The movie shows that the real equation is hard to remove, and it is always better to give your relationship another chance but with a will to try and really try to make things right. Leaving and walking on may be easy, but holding on is always worth it.
3. Amar Singh Chamkila (2024)
IMDb Rating: 7.9/10 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Among one of the best releases for me this year, Amar Singh Chamkila explores Imtiaz Ali’s talent beyond seeking love and self-discovery. This movie revolves around caste discrimination and moral policing. Imtiaz Ali entrenches the story with societal prejudice and tries to bring out the best plot line through these themes.
Though a bit different from his contemplative movies like Tamasha, this movie nevertheless ends up pushing us to do the same thing but in a different route. AR Rahman’s music and Diljit Dosanjh’s vocals, along with his acting, make the movie even more worthwhile. The second half can be a bit repetitive and slow, but overall, the movie does its job well.

4. Srikanth (2024)
IMDb Rating: 8.1/10 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Over the years, Bollywood has made tremendous progress in touching upon social issues that are often brushed under the carpet. Be it marital rape, sexual assault, child abuse, domestic violence, mental health, etc, Bollywood has covered all of these subjects. However, Srikanth brings up a much-underrepresented subject of disabled people. Srikanth shows the story of a person with a disability and how they are treated in our country.
Being a biopic, the movie doesn’t give you the heroes you get every time you watch movies like these, but it has an inspiring story to tell. Rajkummar Rao gives an exceptional performance. One of the important lessons in the story is how Srikanth is denied admission to Indian colleges but is offered admission into four foreign universities completely based on his merit. Doesn’t it say a lot about our educational system? Anyway, the movie is among the best releases of this year.
5. Laapataa Ladies (2023)
IMDb Rating: 8.5/10 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨
Laapataa Ladies demonstrates two women’s struggle against patriarchy in their own ways in a rural environment. The movie follows two young brides who get Laapataa or Disappear as they are accidentally swapped (yes, swapped) during a train journey, ensuing chaos. Kiran Rao returns to the field of direction after almost two decades. Laapataa Ladies is a movie that emotionally invests you in its plot while also making you laugh with its humour.
Conclusion–
These were some of the films we watched in May 2024. While we watched some of the older movies to bring out the sheer talent and creativity hidden in them, we also watched some of the recent releases. Srikanth is a motivating biopic, while Amar Singh Chamkila also carries an important social message much like the former. We were reminded of One Day after watching the series, while Laapataa Ladies was one of those films that had to be watched based on the hype it created, but for all the right reasons! Have you watched any of them? If yes, which one did you like the most?
