Sometimes a director or a production house dive deep into the ocean of film making that they forget about the audience and their response. There are certain movies with no substance or elements of cinematic art but still manage to do well at the box office and some brilliant pieces of art with everything in it failed to generate commercial success. Here are some of the box office flops which earned lesser than what they were expected to:
1. Annihilation:
Alex Garland’s Sci-Fi thriller starring Natalie Portman in the lead role although earned very serious critical response and is considered to be one among the better Sci-Fi movies yet it failed to earn even the figure of its actual budget. Despite its brilliance, it only managed to collect $32M however its original budget was around $40M.
2. The Shawshank Redemption:
With a 9.3 IMDb rating, this brilliant piece of art is one of the top-rated movies of all time. Released in 1994, this movie earned only $16M and is also categorized as a flop. Recently, on the completion of 26 years, Morgan Freeman tweeted:

3. Fight Club:
Directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt, this brilliant piece of cinema also failed at the box office. Yes! You read it right, widely considered as an iconic movie of all time but still, it failed to do the mathematics. It earned only $36M at the box office.
4. Robin hood:
A movie that should top the yearly charts with everything that a commercial art could accommodate but still couldn’t generate success at the box office. It could only manage to earn $85M to that of the original $97M budget.
5. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword:
There are many legends of King Arthur and everyone loves them however this movie failed to sell enough tickets at the cinema houses. This movie is a perfect one time watch for those searching thrill in movies.
6. The Lone Ranger:
Johnny Depp with his style of acting pulls it off in style as well but he failed to bring dollars home. This film received two Oscar nominations but it was bombed at the box office.
7. Mullholland drive:
It is not a movie for those who want to find sense and logic in everything, it is a movie craving praise and approval of cinephiles. Even though it is named as the best film of the 21st century, it failed to generate revenues at the box office with only $7M.
8. Citizen Kane:
With many nominations for academy awards, it wouldn’t be wrong to deem it as Orson Welles’ masterpiece. Still considered to be one of the best films ever made Citizen Kane is a box office failure, RKO Radio Pictures lost almost $160000 on Citizen Kane.
9. The Master:
Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master pulls you towards it and calls for re-watching. It is an extraordinary piece of cinema and earned Oscar nominations for all the three actors in lead but it could only manage $28.3M worldwide. It opened with a bang but couldn’t manage to keep steady at the box office.
10. Warrior:
The one who is a film buff surely has a corner of heart reserved for Tom Hardy. This piece is regarded as the best mixed martial arts film ever made. It can make you emotional and hurt at the same time. Exceptional performances by the leads, Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, and Nick Nolte. It even earned Nolte an Oscar nomination. However, it failed miserably at the box office with only $13M.
