70 coronavirus vaccines are under development globally, with three candidates already being tested in human trials, according to the World Health Organization(WHO), as drugmakers race to find a cure for the virus.
The vaccine that is the closest to complete clinical trials is developed by Hong-Kong listed CanSino Biologics Inc. and the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology. The vaccine is currently in phase two.
According to a WHO document, the other two treatments are developed by the U.S. drugmakers Morderna Inc. and Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc. These two are also being tested in humans.
CanSino Chairman and CEO Xuefeng Yu said, “Thanks to our collaborators and our diligent team, who worked almost around the clock since late January to develop this vaccine candidate with sound scientific data to support IND filing.”
Progress in the development of the vaccine is happening at an exceptional rate as the virus looks improbable to be coined out via containment measures only.
All drugmakers are trying to manufacture a vaccine that would be the most effective. The drug industry is hoping to compress the time it usually takes to bring a vaccine to market, from 10-15 years to within the next year.
According to a WHO document pharmaceutical giants like Pfizer Inc. and Sanofi also have vaccine candidates in preclinical stage.
