In Bollywood, songs are as important for a movie as the plot, performances, and direction. Sometimes, a beautiful composition voiced by a suitable vocal stands out to be a trademark for the movie’s success. In times, we have seen so many blockbuster movies with dull composition and various not-so-worthy movies embedded with luminous songs.

1. MERE NAAM TU (ZERO, 2018)
Specifically, the song has everything that a beautiful song craves for. A euphoric composition, beautiful voice, calming cinematography, and the king of romance himself. The symphony created out of the orchestra by Ajay-Atul and the vocals by very young and talented Abhay Jodhpurkar will calm the extremes of mind. The composition backed by flute while the screen goes pink. SRK romancing the leading lady is something you can’t ask for more in a romantic song. This combo of the master composition and calming cinematography had everything except a good film to bank on.
2. YAADON MEIN (JAB HARRY MET SEJAL, 2012)
There is always a spark when Imteyaz Ali’s storyline has Pritam on board for music, they simply create the magic of symphony thread beautifully with the film. Pritam’s composition is backed with a musical style of Fado, traditional music from Portugal, where the particular scene of the movie is based. The singers coped good enough to put that European flavour into their vocal. Jonita Gandhi sounds beautiful but the magic begins with the vocals of Mohd. Irfan that comes mid-way through the song, his heartfelt singing really made Irshad Kamil’s lyrics deep and emotional. However, the movie didn’t do well despite having Shah Rukh on board with Imteyaz Ali, we feel the composition deserved a well-doing movie.
3. HAMINASTU (FITOOR, 2016)
The song is few of the last collaboration of Pakistani artists with their Indian counterparts as further the border tension between the countries went on with official block for Pakistani artists to have any Indian projects in future. The magical vocals of Zeb Bangash are nothing but as beautiful as Kashmir in the song. Composed by very musical Amit Trivedi and penned flawlessly by veteran Swanand Kirkire the cinematography of the song calms your eyes when the song soothes your ears and together they have all the hearts. With beautiful Katrina Kaif sailing in the winters of Kashmir and Aditya Roy Kapur depicting as an artist, the song went on to be more gripping on the audience than the movie. Haminastu really deserved a more celebrated movie to be backed with.
4. KILL DIL (KILL DIL, 2014)
Another direction of Shaad Ali after Jhoom Barabar Jhoom where the title song by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composition built more with the audience than the movie itself. A retro flavour portraying a bromance between Ranveer Singh and Ali Zafar with gangster background using even the guns to create melody is nothing but a masterpiece. The blend of whistles through the grooves of the song makes you want to move. The song penned by Gulzar could be seen as a contemporary of “Ye Dosti Hum Nahi Todengey” where legendary singers of Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar came together to create the magic between Jai and Viru’s friendship. Sonu Nigam and Shankar Mahadevan complimenting each other throughout the song makes everyone hooked. Such an elite pack of composition and vocals deserved nothing less than a more accepted movie.
5. BANJARA (EK VILLAIN, 2014)
The movie was directed by Mohit Suri who had pitched beautiful composition with his every film. After making people emotional with soulful compositions of Aashiqui 2, Mithoon was expected to serve more magic out of his music and he does it right again. Mohd. Irfan’s vocals around this beautiful composition is such a track that starts slowly building up a bridge of emotions but still, you can’t get enough of it even after listening hundreds of time on the loop. Other than this, the movie had more beautiful songs but it seems Mohit Suri slightly got distracted from the movie with the music. The song really is a gem that deserved a better crown.
6. HELLO HELLO (JHOOTHA HI SAHI, 2010)
The song as it seems is around a telephonic conversation between two lovers depicting the communication out of loneliness. It was couple of years after “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa”, the music maestro AR Rahman composed the Abbas Tyrewala lyrics sung by Karthik. The lyricist stood out to mould the writing into a conversational style which is the soul of the song and with AR Rahman’s music, the song seems no less than a perfect fit. The movie on other hand lacked more than one thing but got a song that deserved a better film.
7. KHANABADOSH (LONDON DREAMS, 2009)
The Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composition of Prasoon Joshi’s lyrics is a song about dreams that sounds so living and energetic to listen. The movie ‘London Dreams’ is about an Indian band that struggle their way to success in London with Desi music. However, the film by Vipul Shah seems less planned on-screen but the songs and composition really win it over the whole movie. Another song from the same movie that would’ve made it to this list is “Barso Yaaro“, but ‘Khanabadosh’ had that dream-life vibe which we can relate in one or other ways. The music-based movie lacked a better direction that the compositions deserved rightly.
8. FIQRANA (BLUE, 2009)
A not so AR Rahman song, which was a part of a film with a massive cast and heavy budget gets heavily drowned in the theatres. The song sounds not much great at first glance, but that’s the beauty of AR Rahman’s composition builds that takes up the lead with every time you listen to it. The lyrics are okay with the repeated and predictable pattern but the song stays on the loop once you start listening.
9. TERE NAINA (CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, 2009)
Another Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy prime composition that rightly deserved a better film around it. Classic vocal touches by Shankar Mahadevan and melodious voice of Shreya Ghosal makes the song hooked into your heart. The cinematography around the song is the leading pair of the movie, Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone sailing over the nightlife of Shanghai with an umbrella really gives a dreamy taste to the song. The slo-mo shot compliments the song beautifully.
10. MANMOHINI MOREY (YUVVRAAJ, 2008)
The cult of Subash Ghai which didn’t even go near to be a classic but had a lineup of beautiful composition by none other than the maestro AR Rahman. The song ‘Manmohini Morey’ is a blend of the pure classic bandish backed with electronic beats. The vocals are perfectly put around the music by Vijay Prakash who is nothing short of heavenly with embellishments and aalaps. AR Rahman’s touch really made the Hindustani classical blend with a modern touch to make it into an easy listen.
