Green Hydrogen is generated by using renewable energy by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. This green method has the potential to reduce the emission of harmful gases that contribute to global warming and cause climate-related issues and this could decarbonize greenhouse gas emitting sectors. This could be a sustainable source of energy if we as a world want to breathe and stay in a carbon-free hazardous environment. Green Hydrogen is the cleanest form of energy in the world and this will become more of necessity than choice.
Human activities are contributing to the emission of greenhouse gases at a record high. All these activities are subsidizing a global rise in temperature and the temperature of the earth is rising at a dangerous level and that is affecting every sphere of existence of living beings.
According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report, we are at least one degree Celsius above the preindustrial level that scientists have already declared unacceptable risk for the existence of life. It is said if we do not start considering it a crucial problem and start working on it, temperatures could rise to above three degrees Celsius by 2100 and that will cause irreparable damage to the bio network. It’s already affecting the food and water security, the air we consume, the food we eat, and the land on which we live.
The glaciers are melting at a rate like never before. The disaster linked to climate and environment is affecting human existence at fast rates. People are struggling for food because of the aftermath of climate-related issues.
It is high time to come forward as a world to work on reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. This is a war we can’t afford to lose and have to win at any cost. Seeing the urgency of climate action, adapting green hydrogen looks like one sustainable way to lower the carbon footprint and limit global warming.
Indian companies are coming forward to be a part of this green hydrogen revolution.
1. Reliance Industries Limited: Reliance Industries Limited is one of the largest private sector oil and Gas Companies that announced its plans to go green and plans to become a carbon-free firm by 2035. It aims to replace its fuel with clean hydrogen. The firm also presented its plan to invest ₹750 billion over the next three years in renewable energy. 600 billion will go into a green energy complex called Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This complex will manufacture solar cells and modules, battery unit’s etcetera to produce green hydrogen.
2. NTPC: National Thermal Power Corporation Limited, an Indian statutory corporation also plans to produce green hydrogen on a commercial level and reduce carbon emission. NTCP is working on a hydrogen project on its upcoming 4,750 MW renewable energy park at the Rann of Kutch. NTPC is also working on establishing a hydrogen fueling station in Leh, Ladakh.
3. GAIL: Gas Authority of India Limited has also some aspiring plans to use green hydrogen and promote carbon-free fuel. They plan to build India’s largest green hydrogen plant. The company has floated a global tender to procure an electrolyzer, said Manoj Jain, chairman and managing director of GAIL. They have finalized units for this project as well and have started mixing hydrogen in natural gases.
4. Larsen and Toubro: Larsen and Toubro have announced plans to set up a green hydrogen plant at Hazaria Complex and will also put up a few more in its other manufacturing units. Senior Executive Vice President (Energy), Subramanian Sarma shared that an announcement could come in its financial year. The company aims to be net-zero emission by 2040.
5. Indian Oil Corporation: They recently announced a plan to establish its plan to build a green hydrogen plant in Uttar Pradesh. They have set a target of converting 10 per cent of its hydrogen consumption to green hydrogen.
