Introduction
Constitution Day, also known as National Law Day or Samvidhan Diwas in India, is held every year on November 26 to commemorate the promulgation of the Indian Constitution.
On this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly formally enacted the Indian Constitution, which went into effect on January 26, 1950. Republic Day is honoured on this day.
The Constituent Assembly of India established 13 committees, including a Drafting Committee, to draught the Indian Constitution. Dr BR Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution, led the Constituent Assembly’s writing committee after examining the constitutions of approximately 60 countries. Following the country’s independence from the British government in 1947, its members served in the country’s first Parliament. It is the world’s longest written constitution, with 395 Articles, 22 Parts, and 12 Schedules.
History
The Constituent Assembly, the body tasked with drafting the Constitution, met for the first time on December 9, 1946. The Assembly took over three years to prepare the document, with more than 114 days dedicated only to refining the paper’s substance.
On December 13, 1946, then-prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru introduced the “Objectives Resolution,” which was eventually accepted as the Preamble on January 22, 1947.
Ambedkar headed the Drafting Committee, one of the Constituent Assembly’s 17 committees. The aim was to draught the country’s constitution. Out of the 7,600 amendments presented, this Committee rejected 2,400.
