Introduction

Constitution Day, also known as National Law Day or Samvidhan Diwas in India, is held every year on November 26 to commemorate the promulgation of the Indian Constitution.

On this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly formally enacted the Indian Constitution, which went into effect on January 26, 1950. Republic Day is honoured on this day.

The Constituent Assembly of India established 13 committees, including a Drafting Committee, to draught the Indian Constitution. Dr BR Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution, led the Constituent Assembly’s writing committee after examining the constitutions of approximately 60 countries. Following the country’s independence from the British government in 1947, its members served in the country’s first Parliament. It is the world’s longest written constitution, with 395 Articles, 22 Parts, and 12 Schedules.

History

The Constituent Assembly, the body tasked with drafting the Constitution, met for the first time on December 9, 1946. The Assembly took over three years to prepare the document, with more than 114 days dedicated only to refining the paper’s substance.

Constitution Day 2021

This year’s Constitution Day will be commemorated in the Parliament’s central hall as part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.’ President Ram Nath Kovind will preside over the event, which will be attended by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and other dignitaries.

According to the official release, the President will also launch an “Online Quiz on Constitutional Demo.” On Constitution Day, the Supreme Court will be joined by Chief Justices of all High Courts and senior-most puisne Judges, the Solicitor General of India, and renowned members of the legal community.

As part of the celebrations for Constitution Day, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju also launched an online course on the subject of the Indian Constitution on November 25.

The Importance of Constitution Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi designated November 26 as India’s Constitution Day in 2015 as part of the year-long commemoration of Dr BR Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary. The government’s decision was interpreted as an attempt to claim Ambedkar’s legacy, with the goal of promoting Constitutional ideals among citizens and the architect of the Constitution, Dr BR Ambedkar. Following the 2015 cabinet meeting.

Previously, the day was honoured as National Law Day. Ambedkar was also the country’s first Law Minister after independence.

Conclusion

The constitution of India is regarded as the basis and source of all statute legislation in the country. The supreme source of law establishes the fundamental foundation for people’ rights and obligations, the powers of governmental institutions, the political code and structure, guiding principles, and, most crucially, the science underlying any current or proposed legislation. The Indian Constitution is a living constitution that may be modified to reflect a changing society. Since 2015, the 26th of November has been designated as Constitution Day. This day, also known as National Law Day, marks the Constituent Assembly’s formal approval of India’s Constitution on November 26, 1949.
