CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg held a conference with 25,000 of his employees to discourse about the provocative tweets of President Trump about the ongoing protests that intensified when demonstrators set buildings on fire and vandalised shops.
People have been questioning the inaction of Facebook and Twitter Authorities in deleting the violent tweet.
“We basically concluded after the research and after everything I’ve read and all the different folks that I’ve talked to, that reference is clearly to aggressive policing – maybe excessive policing – but has no history of being read as a dog whistle for vigilante supporters to take justice into their own hands,” Zuckerberg said.
Here is what Zuckerberg said, according to a transcript of the leaked audio on Recode.
You know, if somebody is actually going to encourage violence, I think in general, you just — you just don’t want that content up. But our policies around incitement of violence, you know, have pretty — have some clear precedents right around if people have to be calling for violence or targeting specific individuals. There have been examples of government officials around the world, we’ve taken them down…
And there have been cases in India, for example, where someone said, “Hey, if the police don’t take care of this, our supporters will get in there and clear the streets.” That is kind of encouraging supporters to go do that in a more direct way, and we took that down. So we have a precedent for that.”
And this is what Kapil Mishra said
Three days’ ultimatum to Delhi Police – clear out the streets of Jaffrabad and Chand Bagh, after that don’t try to reason with us, we won’t listen to you also, just three days.”
Zuckerberg’s quote appears to be a reference to this speech made by Mishra in February which is considered one of the prime reasons for the triggering of Northeast Delhi Riots accounting for the death of 40+ Indians.
During Trump’s visit to India, Kapil Mishra addressed the Anti CAA protestors giving a three-day ultimatum with the DCP helplessly standing right next to him.
“We will maintain peace until (US President) Donald Trump is in India. After that, we refuse to listen to even the police if the roads are not cleared…. we will be forced to hit the streets,” he is heard saying in a video.
While Delhicourt remarked that the ongoing investigation on the Delhi Violence seems to be targeted towards one end, that is the anti – CAA group with Safoora Zargar, Asif Tanha Iqbal, Natasha Narwhal booked and in jail. Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur, and other political leaders who made inflammatory remarks during the demonstrations which led to the unrest in the Country’s capital still remain free.
Coming to the US, The protesters came out on the roads after the horrifying death of George Floyd on an apparent counterfeit bill. An officer, Derek Chauvin pinned Mr. Floyd down on the pavement with his knee for several minutes resulting in his death. With the #blacklivesmatter protests starting from the Minneapolis Minnesota and soon escalating and spreading to other urban and rural areas, the protests were peaceful at first when somehow the demonstrators got access to the police precinct setting on fire some parts of the buildings, looting and vandalising shop. Speaking against the unrest, Trump’s inflammatory response may have helped in instigating the protestors even more.
What remains unclear is why the tweet wasn’t taken down when it clear cut helped to incite people even more. However, the question is bilateral, why one side still remains untouched while the world is speaking up about the hate speeches and why the hate speech is allowed to be upheld when it is contrary to what it promises to be i.e “for the public interest.”
