Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon revived the Barry Gibb Talk Show on Saturday Night Live on 27 January 2024. Fallon played Barry Gibb and Timberlake played Robin Gibb in the episode hosted by Dakota Johnson, with Timberlake also the musical guest. It was the sketch’s first return since December 2013.

The reunion delighted long-time SNL fans, because the Bee Gees parody is one of the best-known recurring sketches from Fallon’s years on the show. Here is what happened, how the sketch began and what both performers have been doing since.

What happened on SNL in January 2024

The episode was the tenth of SNL’s 49th season. Actor Dakota Johnson hosted, and Timberlake performed two songs from his then upcoming album: “Selfish” and “Sanctified”, the second with rapper Tobe Nwigwe.

Fallon, who has hosted NBC’s The Tonight Show since 2014, made a surprise return. He appeared in the opening monologue, introduced one of Timberlake’s songs and put on the long hair, beard and white suit of Barry Gibb for the sketch.

In the new version, the “Gibb brothers” hosted guests played by cast members and the host. Kenan Thompson played legal commentator Elie Mystal, Bowen Yang played former US presidential candidate Andrew Yang, and Johnson played the social media personality known as JoJoFromJerz. As always, Barry lost his temper with the guests while Robin gave short, flat answers.

What is the Barry Gibb Talk Show?

The sketch is a parody talk show supposedly hosted by Barry and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, the pop group famous for disco hits such as “Stayin’ Alive” and “How Deep Is Your Love”. Fallon plays Barry as a short-tempered host who suddenly switches into the group’s famous falsetto in the middle of a sentence.

Timberlake plays Robin, who usually sits quietly and replies to most questions with a variation of “No, I don’t”. The joke depends on Fallon’s shouting and Timberlake’s deadpan reactions, and both actors often struggle not to laugh.

The look is a big part of the joke. Fallon wears a long feathered wig and beard as Barry, and both actors wear open collars and medallions styled on the Bee Gees of the late 1970s.

The guests are usually political figures or commentators played by cast members, which allows the writers to comment on the news of the week. For more celebrity and pop culture stories, visit our entertainment section.

A short history of the sketch

The sketch began in the early 2000s, when Fallon was a cast member on SNL. He joined the show in 1998 and left in 2004. The first version was set during California’s 2003 governor recall election, with Timberlake hosting and playing Robin.

Over the next decade, the pair brought it back several times when Timberlake hosted or performed. Guests over the years included parodies of politicians, judges, journalists and economists.

The 2013 episode with the real Barry Gibb

The most famous edition aired on 21 December 2013. Fallon hosted SNL that night and Timberlake was the musical guest. Madonna appeared as herself, and at the end of the sketch the real Barry Gibb walked on stage next to Fallon, a moment widely shared online.

Robin Gibb had died in May 2012, and Maurice Gibb in January 2003, leaving Barry as the last surviving Gibb brother of the Bee Gees.

Why the return mattered

The 2024 return came more than ten years after the previous edition. For many viewers it was a reminder of the long working friendship between Fallon and Timberlake, who have appeared together many times on SNL and on The Tonight Show.

It also came just weeks after Barry Gibb was honoured at the 46th Kennedy Center Honors in Washington in December 2023, which renewed interest in the Bee Gees’ music.

What Timberlake and Fallon did next

Timberlake’s sixth studio album, Everything I Thought It Was, was released on 15 March 2024. His Forget Tomorrow World Tour began in Vancouver in April 2024 and ran until July 2025, according to reports.

In June 2024, Timberlake was arrested in Sag Harbor, New York, on a drink driving charge. In September 2024 he pleaded guilty to a lesser, non-criminal driving while impaired violation, and the original charge was dropped, as reported by major US outlets.

Fallon continues to host The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC. In September 2025 he launched On Brand with Jimmy Fallon, an NBC reality competition about creating advertising campaigns. He was also part of SNL’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2025. More on the people making news is in our buzz section.
