The film is strange and unsettling, with sudden shifts in time and tone. It premiered on Netflix on 4 September 2020. Watch it when you are in the mood for something that keeps you thinking long after it ends.

2. Three of Us (2022)

Avinash Arun’s quiet Hindi drama stars Shefali Shah as Shailaja, a woman living with dementia. She travels along the Konkan coast with her husband (Swanand Kirkire) to revisit her childhood, and meets her old sweetheart Pradeep (Jaideep Ahlawat).

The film is slow and gentle, about memory, regret and closure. It premiered at IFFI in November 2022, released in theatres in November 2023, and now streams on Netflix in India.

3. Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023)

Arjun Varain Singh’s debut follows three Mumbai friends, played by Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday and Adarsh Gourav, whose lives are shaped by social media. It was written with Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti and released directly on Netflix on 26 December 2023.

Parts of the story are light, but it touches on online validation, dating apps, heartbreak and friendship in ways many young viewers will recognise.

4. Mother of the Bride (2024)

In this Netflix romantic comedy directed by Mark Waters, Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) comes home engaged and plans a wedding in Phuket, Thailand. Her mother Lana (Brooke Shields) then discovers that the groom’s father, Will (Benjamin Bratt), is the man who broke her heart in college.

Critics were not kind to it, but it reached 77 million views by the end of June 2024. Pick it for an easy, low-effort watch.

5. Fighter (2024)

Siddharth Anand’s aerial action film stars Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone and Anil Kapoor as Indian Air Force officers in an elite unit called the Air Dragons. The story moves through a terror attack, a counterstrike and a rescue mission.

It earned about Rs 344 crore worldwide and premiered on Netflix on 21 March 2024. The flying sequences are the main reason to watch, especially on a big screen at home. Check the app for current availability.

6. Dunki (2023)

Rajkumar Hirani’s comedy drama stars Shah Rukh Khan as Hardy, with Taapsee Pannu, Vikram Kochhar and Anil Grover as friends from Punjab who try to reach London through the illegal “donkey route”. Vicky Kaushal has a special appearance.

The film has light moments but also looks at why people migrate and what they risk. It grossed an estimated Rs 470 crore worldwide and has streamed on Netflix since 15 February 2024.

7. The Irishman (2019)

Martin Scorsese’s 209-minute crime epic stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. It is based on Charles Brandt’s 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses and follows a truck driver who becomes a hitman linked to union leader Jimmy Hoffa.

The film received 10 Academy Award nominations. It is long, so consider watching it over two evenings.

8. Laapataa Ladies (2024)

Kiran Rao’s comedy drama begins with two brides getting swapped on a crowded train in a fictional state. One, Phool, is left at a railway station and learns to stand on her own. The other, Jaya, has plans her new family knows nothing about.

It was India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards and won 13 awards at the 70th Filmfare Awards, including Best Film. It is warm, funny and sharp about women’s choices.

9. Maharaja (2024)

Nithilan Saminathan’s Tamil thriller stars Vijay Sethupathi as a Chennai barber who walks into a police station to report a stolen dustbin. The police soon suspect he wants something else.

The story keeps its cards close and builds to a strong final act. It began streaming on Netflix on 12 July 2024 and later became a hit in China. Avoid spoilers before you watch.
