6 best edtech apps for personalised learning in India
1. Physics Wallah (PW)
Physics Wallah began in 2016 as Alakh Pandey’s YouTube channel teaching physics for JEE. It became a company in 2020 and a unicorn in June 2022. In November 2025 it went public, listing on the NSE and BSE after a Rs 3,480 crore offering, according to Wikipedia.

PW now covers JEE, NEET, CBSE, state boards, UPSC and Olympiads. Its main appeal is price: courses cost much less than many rivals, and it also runs offline centres in several cities for students who want classroom teaching.
2. Vedantu
Founded in 2014 in Bengaluru by a group of IIT alumni, Vedantu focuses on live online tutoring for students in classes 4 to 12, mainly CBSE and ICSE. It also offers preparation for JEE Foundation, NEET and NTSE.
Its one-to-one and small-group live sessions are its main form of personalisation, since teachers can respond to a student’s doubts in real time. Wikipedia notes that Vedantu, like several edtech firms, cut hundreds of jobs in 2022.
3. Embibe
Embibe was founded in 2012 by Aditi Avasthi and uses artificial intelligence and data analytics to tailor practice to each student. In 2018, Reliance Industries agreed to buy a majority stake of about 73% and invest over $180 million, Inc42 reported.
The app tracks where a student makes mistakes and suggests what to practise next. It covers school subjects as well as entrance exams, and Jio users have been offered access to its premium plan in the past.

4. Simplilearn
Simplilearn, founded in 2010, is aimed at working professionals rather than school students. It offers live online classes and certification programmes in areas such as technology, data science and digital marketing, with more than 400 courses listed on its website.
The company describes itself as a Blackstone company and lists partnerships with universities and technology firms including Purdue University, IBM, AWS, Microsoft and Google. It is a good choice for people who want a recognised certificate to switch roles.
5. SWAYAM
SWAYAM is the Government of India’s free online course platform, run by the Ministry of Education. It launched in July 2017 and offers courses from class 9 up to postgraduate level, built by national coordinators such as NPTEL, UGC, CEC, NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU and IIM Bangalore.
The key benefit is credit. Under UGC rules, universities can accept SWAYAM credits for up to 20% of a degree programme. The platform says it offers free access to everyone, which makes it a strong option for college students on a budget.
6. DIKSHA
DIKSHA, short for Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing, is the national platform for school education from the Department of School Education and Literacy. It offers digital textbooks, lessons and courses for students and teachers.
Content is organised by stage, from pre-primary to class 12, with sections for NCERT, CBSE, NIOS and 36 states and union territories. That makes it especially useful for students on state boards who want material in their own language.
What happened to BYJU’S, Toppr and Meritnation
Our earlier list included BYJU’S, Toppr and Meritnation. We have removed them in this update. BYJU’S, founded in 2011, has been caught up in insolvency proceedings in India and a long dispute with US lenders, according to Wikipedia. Its founder Byju Raveendran said in October 2024 that the company was worth zero.
Toppr was acquired by BYJU’S in 2021. We could not confirm the current status of Toppr or Meritnation from reliable sources, so we suggest checking the app stores before paying for any subscription on these platforms.
How to pick the right app
- School students on a budget: start with DIKSHA, then add PW if you need coaching.

- Working professionals: Simplilearn for certifications.
