What are your options for a duplicate CBSE marksheet?

CBSE now offers three routes. Which one you use depends on how old your result is and whether you need a paper copy or a digital one is enough.

  • DigiLocker: a free, digitally signed copy of your marksheet, passing certificate or migration certificate, if CBSE has uploaded it for your batch.
  • DADS portal: CBSE’s online system for applying for a duplicate marksheet, passing certificate or migration certificate, with a choice of a digital copy or a printed copy sent by speed post.
  • Regional office: the offline route, useful for very old records or when the online application runs into trouble.

Many people who lose a marksheet do not need a paper duplicate at all. If you only need to show proof of your result for an admission form or a job application, the DigiLocker copy is usually the fastest answer.

How to download your CBSE marksheet from DigiLocker

CBSE uploads digitally signed marksheets, passing certificates and migration certificates to DigiLocker after results are declared. These copies carry a QR code that colleges and employers can scan to check them. If you are new to the app, read our guide on using DigiLocker and the validity of its documents.

  1. Install the DigiLocker app or open the DigiLocker website, and sign up with your mobile number. Linking Aadhaar makes the account more useful for other documents too.
  2. Go to the search or “Issued documents” section and search for “Central Board of Secondary Education”.
  3. Pick the document you need, such as the Class 10 or Class 12 marksheet, passing certificate or migration certificate.
  4. Enter the details asked for, usually your roll number and year of passing.
  5. Once fetched, the document is saved in your issued documents. Download the PDF and keep a copy on your phone and in email.

If DigiLocker says the record is not found, check the roll number and year first. Older batches may not be available, and in that case the DADS route is the next step.

Migration certificate is now digital only

From the 2025 board exam cycle, CBSE stopped printing physical migration certificates for Class 10 and 12 students, as reported by Careers360 in October 2025. The digitally signed migration certificate is placed in DigiLocker, and no fee is charged for it. The decision follows a UGC direction asking universities to accept digital certificates from DigiLocker and the National Academic Depository.

During the changeover, students who still need a hard copy of the migration certificate can apply through DADS.

How to apply for a duplicate CBSE marksheet online on DADS

CBSE launched the Duplicate Academic Document System in June 2021. Before that, students had to deposit fees at a bank or send a bank draft by post to the regional office. Now the full application, payment and tracking happen online.

  1. Go to cbse.gov.in and open the link for the Duplicate Academic Document System. You can also reach it through the Students and Parents section of the CBSE website.
  2. Choose the document you want: duplicate marksheet, passing certificate or migration certificate.
  3. Enter your exam details: class, year of passing, roll number, name and school details as they appear on your records.
  4. Select the mode of delivery. Pick a digital copy if a soft copy is enough, or a printed copy if you need paper.
  5. For a printed copy, enter a complete postal address with PIN code. The regional office prints the document and sends it by speed post.
  6. Upload any documents the form asks for, and pay the fee online.
  7. Save the application number or acknowledgement. Use it to track the status and dispatch details on the same portal.

Schools can also apply on behalf of a student through the school login. In that case the document is usually sent to the school.

Documents and details to keep ready

The more accurate your details, the fewer chances of rejection. Keep these handy before you start:

  • Roll number and year of passing. An old admit card, a photocopy of the lost marksheet or a school record helps here.
  • Full name, parents’ names and date of birth exactly as on CBSE records.
  • Name of your school and, if possible, its school code.
  • A government photo ID, such as Aadhaar.
  • A recent passport-size photograph in digital form.
  • A working mobile number and a complete postal address.

Some education portals list a police complaint (FIR or lost document report) and a notarised affidavit as required for lost marksheets. CBSE’s 2021 press release on DADS does not mention these. Check what the DADS form asks for when you apply. If your marksheet was stolen, filing a lost document report with the police is a sensible step anyway, and many state police websites allow it online.

Offline route: applying through the CBSE regional office

CBSE handles duplicate documents through its regional offices, based on the region where your school is located. The offline route makes sense in a few cases:

  • Your result is very old and the online form cannot find your record.
  • Your name or other details differ across records and need to be checked by an official.
  • You want to collect the document in person.

Find your regional office on cbse.gov.in, then contact it or visit it with your ID, any old copy of the marksheet or admit card, and the fee. If you applied online and chose hand collection, take the acknowledgement slip with you. Ask the office about the current payment mode before you go, since CBSE has moved most payments online.

How long does a duplicate CBSE marksheet take?

A DigiLocker copy is available in a few minutes once your record is found. For printed duplicates through DADS, CBSE does not publish a fixed processing time. Education portals such as Careers360 and Collegedunia report around 15 to 30 days, plus postal time.

If you have a deadline, such as a college admission or a visa interview, use the DigiLocker copy for now and apply for the printed duplicate in parallel. CBSE’s fee notice also lists a Rs 500 urgent fee on top of the regular fee. Check if the urgent option is available when you fill in the form.

Which fee applies to you

The fee depends on the number of years since you passed the exam, not your current age. Some examples:

  • A student who passed Class 12 in 2024 and applies in 2026 falls in the “up to 5 years” slab and pays Rs 250.
  • Someone who passed Class 10 in 2014 and applies in 2026 is in the “10 to 20 years” slab and pays Rs 1,000.
  • A person who passed in 2000 is past 20 years and pays Rs 2,000.

The same notice lists Rs 250 for a migration certificate or its duplicate, Rs 200 for a provisional certificate and Rs 1,000 for a correction in a certificate or marksheet, such as a name or date of birth. Note that CBSE no longer charges for the digital migration certificate from 2025.

Practical tips to avoid delays

  • Check DigiLocker first. If your document is there, you may not need to pay at all.
  • Match spellings. Enter your name and parents’ names exactly as on the original. A small mismatch can hold up the application.
  • Choose the right delivery. If a college or employer only wants a verifiable copy, a digital copy is quicker than waiting for the post.
  • Save every receipt. Keep the payment confirmation and application number until the document reaches you.
  • Keep your APAAR ID updated. CBSE students now also have an APAAR ID, which links academic records digitally and can make future verification easier.

Current students should also note the changes coming to CBSE exams, such as the two board exams for Class 10, since the marksheet format may reflect them.
