Eyes are one of the most important organs of living organisms. Being one of the most delicate parts of a human body. We often neglect our eyes that would sooner or later develop into eye-related diseases and problems. The current situation, in which we are living, the entire world is facing this Coronavirus pandemic due to which traveling from one place to another is not safe. Thus, staying in at home or even at the workplace, is the only option left. Due to digitalization, from school going kids to the elder ones, everyone is always gazing at either their computer screen or mobile phones.
The excess of the visual screen in front of our eyes leads to common problems like dark circles, red eyes, puffy eyes, etc. One of the frequently occurred problems is dry eyes and refractive errors which could lead to severe eye diseases like; Cataracts, Color blindness, etc.
Therefore, here are some simple ways in which one would maintain good and healthy eyes:
1. A healthy Diet
Even though the vision and the digestive systems are nowhere near each other physically, the food we eat has a direct impact on our eyesight, and certain food items decrease the risk of vision problems. Thus, the food we consume reflects back in the long run. Consuming a diet high in Omega 3 fatty acids(like fish, nuts), beta carotene(Carrot, spinach), Vitamins C&E(citrus fruits), Zinc(eggs) will help to preserve good eye health. Apart from food, drinking plenty of water or fluids can prevent dehydration and reduce dry eyes.
2. Beauty Sleep
Our Eyes are always working day and night, therefore, a good beauty sleep of around 7 to 8 hours a day is very beneficial not only for our eyes but also for the entire body. You will feel the difference when you will get the sleep you need. You’ll not only look good but also perform well both at home and at work.
3. Exercise your eyes
There are many types of eye exercises, they don’t improve the vision but it increases the blood circulation, removes toxins, relaxes the eyes especially when it is tired from work and visual screens. One of the frequently recommended exercise by doctors is Never & Far focus(Hold your thumb about 10 inches from your face and focus on it for 15 seconds. Find an object roughly 10 to 20 feet away, and focus on it for 15 seconds. Repeat five times). For better results, and guidance one should consult an eye specialist or get vision therapy done.
4. Calming packs
There are some natural ingredients that slowly but steadily give us long term results.
Some natural ingredients like cucumber, potato, rose water, green tea bags have high water content. This helps in hydrating the dryness under the skin of the eyes and the cool temperature helps decrease blood flow in that area. For the calming pack, all you need is to cut the cucumber or potato into two slices place it other the eyes and sit in a reclining position and let the ingredients( natural acids) soak into the eyes. The boost of hydration turns the tired puffy eyes into looking fresh and hydrated. For better results, you could also refrigerate the slices for 10minutes before use.
5. Protection from Blue light
One of the biggest sources of blue light is Sunlight. Apart from that, there are many other sources of blue light such as; LED, CFL light, light from PC, mobile, and television. More or less all visible blue light passes through the cornea and lens and reaches the retina. This light may harm the vision and could prematurely age the eyes and could further lead to digital eyestrain, Retina damage(like; muscular degeneration)
According to a recent NEI-funded study, “eyes of a child can absorb more blue light than adults from digital device screens.” There are a few ways to decrease exposure to blue light. Try to decrease the screentime or take frequent breaks to give your eyes a rest. Use Screen filters that are available on smartphones, laptops to reduce the amount of blue light entering the retina. Use Computer glasses or Anti-reflective lenses that are specially designed for these purposes.
