Quick answer
Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Karnataka that preserves the ruins of Vijayanagara, a capital of one of South India’s greatest empires. Visit between October and February, keep 2 to 3 days, and reach via Hosapete (Hospet), the nearest railway station, about 13 km away.
Hampi’s landscape of granite boulders, temples and river valleys is unlike anywhere else in India. The site was the heart of the Vijayanagara Empire from the 14th to the 16th century, and the “Group of Monuments at Hampi” was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986.
