Hornbill Festival 2026 will be held from 1 to 10 December at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, about 12 km from Kohima, Nagaland. Indian visitors from outside the state need an Inner Line Permit. The easiest way to get there is to fly or take a train to Dimapur, then drive about 74 km to Kohima.

The Hornbill Festival is organised every year by the Government of Nagaland through its tourism and art and culture departments. It was first held in December 2000 and is often called the “Festival of Festivals”, since all the Naga tribes come together at one venue to showcase their traditions.

What happens at the Hornbill Festival

The heart of the festival is the heritage village at Kisama, where each tribe has its own morung, a traditional community house. Visitors can walk through these, watch performances and taste food prepared in each tribe’s style.

  • Cultural performances: Daily song and dance programmes by tribal troupes in traditional attire.
  • Indigenous games: Traditional archery, Naga wrestling and other local sports.
  • Food stalls: Smoked pork, bamboo shoot dishes, local rice beer and vegetarian options at some stalls.
  • Crafts and art: Wood carvings, shawls, beadwork, paintings and sculptures, many of them for sale.
  • Music: Concerts and the Hornbill music events, often held in Kohima in the evenings.
  • Other events: Flower shows, herbal medicine stalls, fashion shows and the Miss Nagaland contest.

Each morung is a good place to understand how the tribes differ in dress, ornaments, music and food. Volunteers and performers are usually happy to explain the meaning of a costume or song if you ask politely.

The opening day usually draws the biggest crowd. Weekdays in the middle of the festival are quieter and better for photography.

Inner Line Permit for Nagaland

Indian citizens who are not residents of Nagaland need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter the state, according to the Nagaland Police. You can apply online through the official ILP portal of the Nagaland government, or in person at Nagaland House offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Shillong and Guwahati.

Apply a few weeks before your trip, keep a printout and carry the same photo ID you used for the application. Check the validity period and fee on the portal when you apply, as these are set by the state government. Foreign nationals follow a separate registration process and should check the latest rules with the Nagaland Police.

How to reach Kisama and Kohima

By air

Dimapur Airport is the closest airport, with flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and some other cities. From Dimapur, Kohima is about 74 km, which takes about two to three hours by taxi, as noted by Time Out. Guwahati airport offers more flight options but adds a long road journey.

By train

Dimapur Railway Station is the main railhead for Nagaland and has direct trains from Guwahati and other cities. Shared taxis and buses run from Dimapur to Kohima.

By road

Kohima is connected by road to Dimapur and Guwahati. Kisama is about 12 km south of Kohima, reachable by shared taxi, private cab or festival shuttle services when available.

Tickets and entry

Entry to the heritage village has historically been inexpensive. Time Out reported in September 2026 that tickets cost Rs 50 to Rs 100 and can be bought at the venue, though prices may vary. Some concerts and special events may carry separate tickets. Check the Nagaland Tourism announcements closer to the dates for the final schedule.

Where to stay

Kohima has hotels, guesthouses and homestays, but demand in early December is very high. Book as early as possible. Villages close to Kisama, such as Kigwema, offer homestays and seasonal camps, which put you within a short drive of the venue. Dimapur has more hotels, but daily travel to Kisama from there is long.

Sample 4-day Hornbill trip plan

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Dimapur, drive to Kohima and check in.
  2. Day 2: Full day at Kisama: morungs, performances and food stalls.
  3. Day 3: Morning at Kisama, afternoon at the Kohima War Cemetery and local markets, evening music events.
  4. Day 4: Drive back to Dimapur for your onward flight or train.

Those who want to trek can add one or two days for Dzukou Valley, which starts from villages south of Kohima. Go with a local guide and check trail conditions first.

Weather and what to pack

December in Kohima is cool by day and cold at night. Pack warm layers, a jacket, comfortable walking shoes and a small torch. The heritage village has slopes and steps, so wear sturdy footwear.

Tips for first-time visitors

  • Ask before photographing performers or elders, especially outside the stage area.
  • Carry cash. Card and UPI acceptance can be patchy at food and craft stalls, and network may be weak.
  • Reach the venue early in the day to avoid crowds and traffic on the Kohima to Kisama road.
  • Add a day or two for nearby places such as the Kohima War Cemetery or the Dzukou Valley trek, if you are fit for it.
  • Respect local rules on alcohol, which differ in Nagaland from many other states.
