The 1990s: Baazigar to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

SRK moved from anti-hero roles to romantic lead in this decade.

1. Baazigar (1993)

“Kabhi kabhi kuch jeetne ke liye kuch haarna bhi padta hai, aur haar kar jeetne waale ko baazigar kehte hain.”

Meaning: Sometimes, to win something, you have to lose something, and the one who wins after losing is called a baazigar (a gambler who turns the game). Ajay, the anti-hero seeking revenge, explains the film’s title.

2. Darr (1993)

“I love you, K-K-K-Kiran.”

Meaning: I love you, K-K-K-Kiran. The stammer became the most imitated SRK line of the 1990s.

3. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

“Bade bade deshon mein aisi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hain, Senorita.”

Meaning: In big countries, such small things keep happening, Senorita. Raj’s shrug during the Europe trip, now everyday Indian slang.

4. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

“Agar yeh tujhe pyaar karti hai, toh yeh palat ke dekhegi… palat… palat!”

Meaning: If she loves you, she will turn around and look… turn… turn! Raj waits to see if Simran looks back from the train.

5. Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)

“Rahul… naam toh suna hoga.”

Meaning: Rahul… you must have heard the name. A cocky introduction that later films kept calling back.

6. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

“Pyaar dosti hai.”

Meaning: Love is friendship. Rahul’s belief that your love should first be your best friend.

7. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

“Hum ek baar jeete hain, ek baar marte hain, shaadi bhi ek baar hoti hai, aur pyaar… ek hi baar hota hai.”

Meaning: We live once, we die once, we marry once, and love… happens only once. Rahul’s college view on love, which the film later questions.

The 2000s: Mohabbatein to Om Shanti Om

Romance met bigger themes: patriotism, tragedy and a tribute to Hindi cinema.

8. Mohabbatein (2000)

“Mohabbat bhi zindagi ki tarah hoti hai, har mod aasaan nahi hota.”

Meaning: Love is like life: not every turn is easy. Raj Aryan, the Gurukul music teacher, to his students.

9. Devdas (2002)

“Kaun kambakht bardaasht karne ko peeta hai?”

Meaning: Which fool drinks to bear the pain? Devdas says he drinks to bear the world, not to forget.

10. Devdas (2002)

“Babuji ne kaha gaon chhod do, sab ne kaha Paro ko chhod do, Paro ne kaha sharab chhod do, aaj tumne keh diya haveli chhod do.”

Meaning: Father said leave the village, everyone said leave Paro, Paro said leave the drink, and today you said leave the mansion. Devdas lists everything he has been asked to give up.

11. Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)

“Pyaar toh bahut log karte hain, lekin mere jaisa pyaar koi nahi kar sakta.”

Meaning: Many people love, but no one can love the way I do. Aman, with little time left, about his love for Naina.

12. Swades (2004)

“Main nahi maanta ki hamara desh duniya ka sabse mahaan desh hai, lekin yeh zaroor maanta hoon ki hum mein kaabiliyat hai, taaqat hai, apne desh ko mahaan banaane ki.”

Meaning: I do not believe our country is the greatest in the world, but I do believe we have the ability and the strength to make it great. NASA scientist Mohan Bhargava to the villagers of Charanpur.

13. Don (2006)

“Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, naamumkin hai.”

Meaning: Catching Don is not just difficult, it is impossible. First said by Amitabh Bachchan in Don (1978); SRK made it his own in the remake.

14. Chak De! India (2007)

“Mujhe states ke naam na sunai dete hain, na dikhai dete hain, sirf ek mulk ka naam sunai deta hai: I-N-D-I-A.”

Meaning: I neither hear nor see the names of states. I hear the name of only one country: I-N-D-I-A. Coach Kabir Khan to players who introduce themselves by state.

15. Om Shanti Om (2007)

“Kehte hain agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho, toh puri kainaat usse tumse milaane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai.”

Meaning: They say if you want something with all your heart, the whole universe works to bring it to you. Echoes an idea from Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist.

16. Om Shanti Om (2007)

“Itni shiddat se maine tumhe paane ki koshish ki hai, ki har zarre ne mujhe tumse milaane ki saazish ki hai.”

Meaning: I have tried so intensely to win you that every particle has conspired to bring me to you. A romantic twist on the ‘kainaat’ line, in 1970s film style.

17. Om Shanti Om (2007)

“Picture abhi baaki hai, mere dost.”

Meaning: The picture is not over yet, my friend. From Om Kapoor’s award speech; now slang for ‘it is not over yet’.

The 2010s: My Name Is Khan to Raees

The roles grew more varied, from Rizwan Khan to a Gujarat bootlegger.

18. My Name Is Khan (2010)

“My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist.”

Meaning: My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist. Rizwan’s message to the US President after 9/11.

19. My Name Is Khan (2010)

“Beauty products se sirf chehra nikharta hai, khoobsurati nahi badhti.”

Meaning: Beauty products only brighten the face, they do not increase beauty. Rizwan’s honest sales pitch in San Francisco.

20. Chennai Express (2013)

“Don’t underestimate the power of a common man.”

Meaning: Everyone has a heart, but not everyone is big-hearted. A play on the film’s title, from Rohit Shetty’s film with Kajol.

23. Raees (2017)

“Koi dhandha chhota nahi hota, aur dhandhe se bada koi dharam nahi hota.”

Meaning: No business is small, and no religion is bigger than business. A lesson from Raees’s mother that shapes his life.

24. Raees (2017)

“Baniye ka dimaag aur Miyanbhai ki daring.”

Meaning: The mind of a Baniya and the daring of a Miyanbhai. How Raees describes himself in the trailer.

25. Raees (2017)

“Gujarat ki hawa mein vyapaar hai, saheb. Meri saans toh rok loge, lekin is hawa ko kaise rokoge?”

Meaning: There is business in Gujarat’s air, sir. You may stop my breath, but how will you stop this air? Raees to the police officer played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

The 2020s: Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki

After a gap of more than four years as a lead, SRK returned in 2023 with three releases. Pathaan and Jawan became two of the highest-grossing Hindi films ever, and both leaned heavily on punchy one-liners.

26. Pathaan (2023)

“Party Pathaan ke ghar pe rakhoge, toh mehmaan nawaazi ke liye Pathaan toh aayega hi.”

Meaning: If you throw a party at Pathaan’s house, Pathaan will surely come to play host. Written by Abbas Tyrewala for SRK’s comeback as a lead.

27. Pathaan (2023)

“Ek soldier yeh nahi poochta ki desh ne uske liye kya kiya, poochta hai ki woh desh ke liye kya kar sakta hai.”

Meaning: A soldier does not ask what the country did for him, he asks what he can do for the country. Pathaan to Jim, the rogue agent played by John Abraham.

28. Jawan (2023)

“Bete ko haath lagaane se pehle, baap se baat kar.”

Meaning: Before you touch the son, talk to the father. Writer Sumit Arora says it was not in the first draft.

29. Jawan (2023)

“Jab main villain banta hoon na, toh mere saamne koi bhi hero tik nahi sakta.”

Meaning: When I become the villain, no hero can stand before me. A nod to SRK’s anti-hero roles in Baazigar and Darr.

30. Jawan (2023)

“Vikram Rathore… naam toh suna hoga.”

Meaning: Vikram Rathore… you must have heard the name. A callback to the ‘naam toh suna hoga’ line from the 1990s.

31. Jawan (2023)

“Paanch ghante chalne wali mosquito coil ke liye itne sawaal karte ho, lekin paanch saal ke liye apni sarkaar chunte waqt ek sawaal nahi karte.”

Meaning: You ask so many questions about a mosquito coil that lasts five hours, but not one question when you choose a government for five years. From Azad’s monologue asking voters to question candidates.

32. Dunki (2023)

“Judge saab, main yahan rehne ke liye apne desh ko gaali nahi doonga.”

Meaning: Judge sir, I will not abuse my country just to stay here. Hardy refuses to call India unsafe to win asylum in a UK court.

33. Dunki (2023)

“Sau saal raaj karke gaye angrezon ne, jab bhi yahan aaye the, humne toh inse nahi poocha tha ki bhai, Hindi aati hai kya?”

Meaning: The British ruled us for a hundred years. When they came here, we never asked them, ‘Brother, do you know Hindi?’ Hardy on English tests for British visas.
