Besides putting various stages of development in motion to make supercomputer access available, India’s National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) is also underpinning the substructure to build the country’s first completely indigenous supercomputer.

India is rapidly ramping up its high computing network and related infrastructure to sustain the demands rose by researchers and academia which will also be useful in encouraging startups and private enterprises to kindle interest in compute-intensive sectors of flood prediction, weather accuracy, oil exploration, genomics, drug discovery and alike, said a DD News report.

The country’s supercomputing network’s capacity is anticipated to goose up to 16 petaflops by the end of the 2nd phase in April 2021, 1st phase of which is already completed by NSM to expand India’s supercomputing infrastructure.

In a bid to install 45 petaflops of high-performance computing capacity in the whole country, NSM is prepared to give a kickstart to the 3rd phase to bolster India’s supercomputing network, say reports.

NSM is working in close proximity with Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to manifest this mission.

To ensure ceaseless growth, NSM has started manufacturing some of the key components required to build a supercomputer indigenously that include system software libraries, storage, HPC-AI converged accelerator, server board, interconnect, processor etc.

India may soon observe the manufacturing of sub-systems and motherboards on its own land if the present momentum of progress is maintained without hindrances.
